The Rabbinute and the RCA reach a deal on conversions, one that allows all previously done RCA conversions to stand, and that does not mandate American rabbis traveling to Jerusalem for "training." On the other hand, the haredi-controlled Rabinute gets to investigate and then approve or reject all American conversion courts.
AddeRabbi has claimed for a month or more that Rabbi Nahum Eisenstein, a well-known haredi kanoi with a hatred of the RCA, is behind the recent attempt to delegitimize RCA conversions. This Rabbi Eisenstein is quoted in this Jerusalem Post piece as a "conversion expert":
[T]he conversion situation in America [is] disorganized. "Unlike Europe, Australia or South Africa, there is no centralized rabbinic court system in America," he said. "Most of the Orthodox conversions are performed by private rabbis and in many cases the other two members of the three-man rabbinic court are not even officially functioning rabbis."
"Major rabbinic organizations such as Agudath Rabanim, Igud Rabanim or the RCA maintain no central registry," added Eisenstein. "Nor is there centralized supervision of all rabbis who perform conversions."
AddRabbi points out that Eisenstein is a acolyte of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the man behind the Rabbi Natan Slifkin, Indian Hair Wigs and New York City Water bans and the man who – knowing Rabbi Metzger's immoral past and Metzger's failure to in any way do teshuva for his misdeeds – backed him for Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi in a successful bid to block the Religious Zionist candidate. (Metzger cannot decide the fate of the conversion issue directly, because he is not qualified as a religious judge, and cannot sit on a conversion panel, hence the intervention of Rabbi Elyashiv's pit bull, Rabbi Eisenstein.)
The only solution to this sad state of affairs is to elect a moderate zionist as the next (hopefully unified) chief rabbi, perhaps someone like Rabbi Shlomo Riskin of Efrat.
Haredi dominance of the Rabbinute cannot be allowed to stand.
