The New York Jewish Week reports on a dangerously disheveled Jewish cemetery in Bayside, Queens, New York, and on the non-Jews who have tried to clean up the cemetery and record the information on the headstones for posterity. These kind non-Jews have been met with both apathy and resistance from the Jewish community and from the Manhattan shul that owns the cemetery. Why would that be? Perhaps this earlier scandal, still unresolved, explains why nobody in the Jewish community wants to preserve the information on those stones – illegal double burials, destruction of graves and more, all approved by Orthodox rabbis with financial ties to the desecrators.
