The New York Jewish Week reports:
… Other organizations, mainly Orthodox ones, are focusing their efforts on aiding the roughly 9,500 Jews from New Orleans who have mostly relocated to Houston, Memphis and other area communities, and those who were stuck in New Orleans as the flood waters rose.
The Chabad-Lubavitch movement has raised about $250,000 and is providing emergency relocation assistance. The two New Orleans-based Chabad emissaries have distributed some $100,000 in direct cash assistance to evacuated [Jewish] families. Chabad volunteers also rescued about 50 stranded people, most of them Jewish, from New Orleans, according to Rabbi Mendy Sharfstein. In Baton Rouge Lubavitchers are also providing ritual Jewish burial preparation for Jews who lost their lives in the flood.…
