TypePad went through a major reworking over the weekend, largely, it seems, to add a new "knitting template." That has resulted in degraded service, extremely slow comment posting, and other problems including the mangled headlines on this blog.
TypePad assures all of us that they are working to repair the problems. So, here we are at noon on Wednesday, waiting for TypePad to fix problems created by its scheduled update that ended two days ago.
The problem behind the problem seems to be the vision of TypePad's founders, who envisioned TypePad as a tool for families and close friends to communicate with each other (think knitting template) and not as a news or commentary source with a wide audience. TypePad's growth has largely been with the latter but its company culture is geared to the former.
The current result of this is service at the level of Blogger on a bad (but not horrible) day. While TypePad "encourages" its members to use blogs for business purposes, the new templates added this week – along with most of the old ones – are not geared toward that goal.
When it is working, as it soon will be, TypePad is a wonderful service – even with the knitting template.
Please bear with us.
