November 3, 2004 – Less than two hours after Democrat John Forbes Kerry delivered a speech conceding the presidential election to Republican George W. Bush, filmmaker Michael Moore – speaking to a worshipful audience made up of some (but not all) of the Dixie Chicks, a Gestalt therapist and members of the San Francisco, Berkeley and Paris, France city councils – insisted that the election was not over and, in fact, had not yet taken place.
“We will continue to work to get out the vote,” Mr. Moore roared, face flushed with emotion. “The barbarians will be stopped at the gate!”
When later asked by a journalist not affiliated with any of the major television networks or National Public Radio how he explained the apparent victory of Mr. Bush, Mr. Moore was frank.
“It’s a flashback, some bad acid I took early in the first Reagan Administration,” said Mr. Moore, while staring intently at the palms of his hands. “I have the proof – I even see the purple snakes.”
