Tallahassee– The Florida Supreme Court in a 7-0 decision today awarded the 2004 World Series to the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Even though the Boston Red Sox won the first four games of the best of seven series, in a scathing decision the Court’s chief justice, writing for the majority noted that, “It is clear from all evidence presented to this court, that the members and fans of the Saint Louis Cardinals did not understand the seriousness of Game 4 or the structure of the series itself. It was incumbent upon Major League Baseball to provide a clear explanation to the players and fans of how the structure of a best-of-seven-game-series works and to emphasize the importance of Game 4 to a team that has already lost Games 1, 2, and 3. This Major League Baseball did not do,” the Court wrote.
While Cardinal players were seen rejoicing after an urgent team meeting called to inform them of the Court’s action, Boston management was defiant.
“We’re going to appeal this all the way to the United States Supreme Court,” a team spokesman said. “This is bullpoppy!”
John Forbes Kerry, the Democrat Presidential candidate and a United States Senator from Massachusetts, noted that his allegences were torn.
“I am a staunch and true-blue Red Sox fan,” Mr. Kerry said while water-skiing off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida. “But as a former law enforcement official I must also respect the Court and it’s decision. This case will be appealed; let the courts decide and justice prevail.”
The Palm Beach County, Florida Elections Board and the City Council of West Palm Beach, Florida contributed to this report.
