Is Sefardi haredi kabbalist to the stars Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto faking an illness to avoid having to return to Israel to face justice?

Pinto admitted bribing a senior police officer and was caught on tape trying to bribe another one. Israel’s attorney general made a plea deal with Pinto in order to prosecute the first top cop – a deal many, many people attacked as overly lenient and ill advised. As part of the deal, Pinto was allowed to travel to US on the promise he would return when needed for his case and to testify against the first police officer.

Now Israeli courts want him back and Pinto is, characteristically, refusing to comply.

Instead, the slippery kabbalist is claiming to have an unnamed illness and is being treated – or so he claims – at Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital in New York, a major cancer center.

But is he really sick?

Pinto’s attorneys reportedly submitted medical documents to an Israeli court that supposedly show Pinto is too ill to return to Israel for next week’s planned reading of the criminal indictment against him and the beginning of his trial process.

But the court rejected the documents, reportedly because they were not actual official medical documents.

Pinto’s attorneys could now submit official documents, if any actually exist. Or they could choose to appeal to the High Court of Justice. Or Pinto – who admits attempting to bribe at least one top cop to get info on an ongoing police investigation into the massive looting of the Hazon Yeshaya charity he effectively controlled, looting which literally took food out of the mouths of poor elderly Holocaust survivors – could return to Israel on time and show up in court.

Pinto is one of the top ten wealthiest rabbis with a base in Israel, with a net worth well into the tens of millions of dollars.

Memorial Sloan Kettering is in New York City, not New Jersey.

If he has cancer, perhaps he wouldn't mind submitting to a few rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to prove it.
