By the way, is it legal to advertise this job for men only?

Today the internet is mamash a sakonas nefoshes. If you had to go for business through a dangerous place, it is only right that you would not go alone. You would take people for protection. Also, today many are choished anyone who does business on the internet, even if you don't look at znus, it's best to have someone who can say "I sat with him the whole day, and he doesn't look." Many Rabbonim are now saying that there is no ne'emonus with the internet. They are choished everyone. It's best to be above such matters.
Posted by: yankel | January 20, 2015 at 01:33 AM
Remind a story, in the old country a shleimazal comes to rhe rabbi andask him to gewt him a job.
The rabbi used hisconnections and returned to guy and said: "I found a job for you, you have to sit in the gatesof the town all day and when moshiach comes, you have to run and inform the people of the town. The job does not pay much but it is permenent"
Posted by: 坏蛋 | January 20, 2015 at 01:41 AM
Yankel - what is to stop the mashgiach from blackmailing the businessman by falsley claiming that he saw him watch Debbie does Agudah?
There is no honor (ne'emonus) among thieves and the Haredi economy is a thieving economy
Posted by: barry | January 20, 2015 at 01:50 AM
Barry, nothing I suppose, but I've never heard of a mashgiach blackmailing the owner of a restaurant or a butcher shop. So here also it's unlikely there will be blackmail. I don't think that the sort of people who take jobs as mashgichim are those sorts of crooks. They would soon lose their job.
Posted by: yankel | January 20, 2015 at 02:07 AM

What is your occupation?
Posted by: nachos ( the original one) | January 20, 2015 at 05:04 AM
Yankel - A mafia 'soldier' who collects protection money from a businessman would not dare to extort additional money for himself from that businessman. This mafia 'soldier' would not do so because he fears the businessman but rather because he fears his boss who he knows will not stand for any competition. Similarly a mashgiach will not extort additional money from that extorted by the hecksher authorities.
Posted by: Barry | January 20, 2015 at 05:16 AM
Barry, the sort of guy that is advertising to pay $100 a day for personal supervision, is in a completely different league from the sort of guy that he will be employing. No noch-schlepper is going to challenge a respected baal habayis businessman, whose standing in the community would flick this mashgiach like dried mucous. I'm not seeing the guys who take this job saying to the hand that feeds them: "pay us more or we'll tell everyone that you are a menuval who watches porn." Moreover, it would require that they be in the room at the same time - thus implicating themselves (as if to say: "we stood by and we watched him do an aveirah.") I agree with Yankel. Your scenario is amusing, but unlikely.

Internet addiction and internet porn addiction is a progressive and debilitating disease. It is no different that alcoholism, compulsive gambling or compulsive overeating. Internet porn addiction may be a part of a larger obsessive compulsive disorder or other disorders in a person. Alcoholism for example is considered a primary disease by the National Medical Association.
Part of addiction is breaking the cycle of addictive behavior. Hence AA for example has people attend 90 meetings in 90 days in order to break the habit the alcoholism. That by no means treats the underlying disease. It just allows a person, especially one with compulsive tendencies, to break the habitual aspect. A person may need therapy and even in patient treatment in conjunction with a 12 step program to treat the disease. Some people go "dry: for many years while never treating the disease itself and end up relapsing or even committing suicide, because they never get to the root of their disease.
Having an internet babysitter is not treating the underlying condition, but this person has taken an amazing and commendable first step in recovery. First of all he has outed himself to the public, which may be the most important step in recovery.Second, he has admitted that he is powerless over the addictive behavior, and third, he understands that his life is unmanageable in that his addiction is interfering with his business.
Not that I know he is an addict for sure, but if he is willing to go to these lengths to stop his behaviors, it's a pretty safe bet.
Many people think that addicts are weak minded and lack strength. There can be nothing further from the truth in this statement. People who think this way, don't understand that addiction is a disease. They also don't understand that people in addiction don't want to stop. The alcohol is not a problem for them, it is the solution to their problems and that is the insanity of the alcoholic mind. In fact they go to incredible lengths to control and manage their addiction, not to stop it but to keep it going. Eventually the addiction wins out in most cases, and that's called rock-bottom.
This disease has nothing to do with religious beliefs or convictions. Such forms of belief, faith and worship no matter how rigorous do nothing to cure alcoholism or addiction.
There is a charedi obsession with demonizing the internet. Charedim and the rest of us have to understand that are two dimensions to this issue. One as it applies to regular people and one as it applies to internet and porn addicts. A regular person can control him or herself from viewing damaging, crude, lude, violent and destructive images etc on the internet by educating themselves about these things. In fact they can probably even view these materials with little effect and they don't need a baby sitter. A non-recovered addict however can have all the baby sitters in the world and still find ways to get the her drug of choice.
As the Big Book of AA points out. An alcoholic can banish himself to an igloo in a remote part of Alaska and will eventually find an Eskimo to give him booze. Thats the alcoholic or addictive mind. A recovered alcoholic can go into a bar, find another drunk and help him get into recovery, so long as his motives are pure.
I hope and pray that this guy gets the help he needs and has the wisdom to realize that his issues go way beyond an internet baby-sitter.

@singlemalt
Excellent post. However, I wonder whether perhaps porn-addiction exists in a somewhat separate category from the classic addiction picture which you so clearly described. Unlike alcohol and gambling, which have been around as long as civilization, the internet is a completely new phenomenon to the human mind. It is, in fact, a testament to the hard-wiring of our psycho-sexual neurology, that there is virtually no end to the insatiable desire of people (particularly, but not exclusively, men) to find new and further erotic images to gaze at (e.g. there is no natural limit to the amount of naked women that your average heterosexual male wants to see).
For many addicts, I imagine it is the constant search for that erotic "hit:" the image or video that will give the desired stimulus. To think otherwise might be simplistic. For an alcoholic, every sip is a hit; for a gambler, every play is a hit. But the porn-addict is not getting an erection and masturbating at every click of the mouse, because they would soon be too exhausted to continue after the first few.
Now I know that you'll regard this analysis as naive - and that's ok; it might be. But I just think that we should cut ourselves some slack in the face of an unprecedented revolution in the dissemination of images and information. To continue the example, it is as if all the alcoholics in the world were to wake up one morning and discover that the oceans were filled with pure single malt.

Lo K'darkah - The mashgiach needs to find somewhere he can hide a video camera. He can get advice from a Washington rabbi if need be. After a few weeks, he does not come to work. The businessman who will be completely out of his mind from sexual frustration will log on to the porn sites and the mashgiach will have all the evidence he needs to blackmail the businessman.
Maybe it is not internet pornography that is his problem. Maybe he needs a mashgiach to break his addiction to Debbie Does Evolutionary Biology.

I volunteer. I believe the best way to train someone to stay away from porn is to first show him all the porn sites and teach him not to go there again.
Posted by: Sarek | January 20, 2015 at 10:28 AM
Lo K'darkah, I by no means claim to understand the addiction and I think you are making a lot of sense. I do think there are many similarities to alcoholism and there are differences as well. In many respects compulsive sexual behaviors are similar to compulsive overeating. When I saw someone severely obese I used to think that they merely lacked will power. I now believe and know that it goes way beyond that. People who compulsively over eat are finding the solution to their pain and emptiness in food. And people eat themselves to death. I know because my father did just that. His compulsive overeating brought him heart disease and eventually kidney failure and death. So, it's serious business.
We have natural instincts for sex and food, but many people use those natural instincts for an unnatural end and purpose. And for some people they cannot control it and it makes their lives unmanageable (ruins their marriage, their job, has health consequences, etc); whether it be food or sex. Also I would say that the goal of the sex addiction, whether that addiction takes the form of internet porn or advances to strip clubs and prostitutes, is in the head (no pun) and not in the penis.
Posted by: singlemalt | January 20, 2015 at 10:38 AM
@Singlemalt –“ Internet addiction and internet porn addiction is a progressive and debilitating disease. It is no different that alcoholism, compulsive gambling or compulsive overeating”
Religious addiction and Torah addiction is a progressive and debilitating disease. It is no different that alcoholism, compulsive gambling or compulsive overeating.
“An alcoholic can banish himself to an igloo in a remote part of Alaska and will eventually find an Eskimo to give him booze.”
A chassid can banish himself to a remote part of Alaska and will still find a Chabad house at which to get his Torah fix.
“A regular person can control him or herself from viewing damaging, crude, lude, violent and destructive images etc on the internet by educating themselves about these things.”
A regular person can control himself from reading crude, lewd and violent Torah stories because he realizes they are fictional stories written by bronze age scribes. But the true Torah addict actually believes his book was written by god and even models his life on these crude, lude and violent stories.
Posted by: Allan | January 20, 2015 at 10:52 AM
Singlemalt, I feel you have a stronger grasp on this topic than most, and I agree with your assessment that addictions, which are made of natural urges that become dysfunctional and damaging when compulsive, are ultimately attempting to solve a mental issue.
But the problem with internet porn - if it is a problem - is huge. As is obvious to anyone who grew up before the advent of the World Wide Web, we, as a species, are like rabbits caught in the headlights.

So he's not going to make the required statutory tax deductions and pay these people the right way? No surprise there.
Posted by: NeverFrum | January 20, 2015 at 11:33 AM
NeverFrum, that was my first thought as to the more compelling issue as relates to religion. "Cash" paying jobs are so commonplace that they can just be advertised without a second thought.
Hi Allan, Interesting thoughts. People can express addictive behaviors in religion, sports, work and I'm sure in many other venues. Good points. It is entirely possible that this guy is obsessing in his religion, that he doesn't have an internet porn addiction that is ruining his life and he's just trying to be obsessively frum.
Lo K'darkah, Keep in many that many people are cross addicted as well. And sure the availability of every kind of crap on the internet is a problem. When internet came out, I learned stuff about deviant sex at age 35 that I never knew or didn't care to know. The fact that my kids were likely exposed to that at age 10, I'm sure wasn't helpful to them.

Again Shmaryah is proving what a clueless ignorant fool he is.this is not the first time ad's like this appeared, most of the time the reason they are looking for someone to sit in the office all day is because they have a female secretary or bookkeeper ,and to avoid the transgression of the ISSUR of YICHUD they must have another male in the room.
By the way Shmaryah, you know very well there is a service that is called NET CHAVEIRIM,whereby they set up a program that will send them a report at the end of the day to all the sites you have visited, thousands of chareidim use that service it cost's no more than a couple of dollars a month, why the hell would anyone spend thousands of dollars for a mashgiach when he can have it for peanuts?.
And besides the point why is this news?,
Shmaryah, you are losing it,get the hell out of that basement before it's too late

This is not the first time an ad like his has Been posted, this is not for a mashgiach you idiot, this guy has a secretary working in his office and there is an issue of YICHUD,being in a room alone all day with the opposite sex which is halachlickly prohibited.
Hey moron,if the guy was looking for a mashgiach for his Internet browsing,he need not spend thousands of dollars on hiring people to babysit him, there are out there numerous programs used by thousands of frum people that keep track on all the sites visited and at the end of day sends that report to a designated person, and it costs no more than 30-40 dollars a month.
Scotty time or a career change
