Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, the head of the Hatnuah Party, and Finance Minister Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid Party, today saying that he "will not tolerate an opposition from within the government.” Lapid and other accuse Netanyahu of selling out to haredi political parties.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, the head of the Hatnuah Party, and Finance Minister Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid Party, today saying that he "will not tolerate an opposition from within the government,” Ha’aretz reported.

Netyanyahu – who is widely considered to be one of the most dishonest politicians in Israel – has been trying to force Lapid and his Yesh Atid Party out of the government for months and replace it with haredi parties that, for the proper financial payments, will be loyal to almost anything Netanyhu wants to do.

But those haredi parties have reportedly refused to join the coalition until after a new election is held.

Netanyhu said today he ask for the Knesset to be dismissed as soon as possible, meaning new elections would be held.

Late yesterday, Lapid accused Netanyhu of selling out to haredi political parties and of trying to scuttle legislation necessary for the country’s growth and stability that haredim dislike. He also rejected the conditions set by Netanyahu for keeping the present coalition government in power.

Those conditions included Lapid agreeing to support the so-called Jewish nation-state bill which is widely viewed by legals scholars as a bridge to discrimination against Israel’s minorities. Israel’s attorney general came out against the bill, as well, as did Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin. Lapid and Livni both oppose the bill, as well, as does the opposition leader of Knesset.

Netanyahu, who has spent his time in office largely ignoring the growing number of hate crimes against minorities, doesn’t seem to care and continued to push the bill, despite the opposition of Lapid, Livni and his own attorney general.

Netanyahu also wanted to freeze Lapid’s zero VAT plan that gives a large tax break on new apartments purchased by first-time home buyers. But those buyers have to meet certain qualifications, including military service. Haredim refuse to serve in the IDF and often refuse to work, meaning they could most often not qualify for this tax break. Haredi parties therefore strongly oppose it, and Netanyahu has sided with them and against the tens of thousands of non-haredi Israelis who would benefit from the tax break in Israel’s superheated housing market.

“Netanyahu is leading Israel into unnecessary elections. The prime minister has chosen to act irresponsibly with respect to the nation, and to put the needs of the Israeli public at the bottom of his agenda. Netanyahu prefers a deal he made with the Haredim on moving up the elections over the interests of all Israeli citizens,” Lapid’s Yesh Atid Party said in a statement yesterday.

Netanyahu will reportedly hold a press conference on tonight.

In the last free elections held for the German Reichstag in Nov. 1932 before the Nazis took power, 14 parties won seats. In the 2013 Israeli elections, 12 parties won seats.

Israel is cursed by its weak proportional voting system. The bar needs to be raised for any party to win seats in the Knesset, as it has been in Germany. In the 2013 German federal elections, only four parties won seats in the Reichstag.

Israel is a very fractured democracy heading towards a theocracy, based on demographic trends. There is no guarantee that it will not collapse from within. If it was up to the Haredi, I suspect that they would abolish the Knesset and the secular court system and their Chief RabbiS would become the temporal as well as the spirtual leaderS of the country.
