A 28-year-old female tourist from Nigeria who was quarantined in Shaare Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem Friday does not have Ebola, doctors said today.
Instead, the woman – a nurse in her native country who arrived in Israel Wednesday as a tourist – tested positive for a bacterial infection. Her condition greatly improved after receiving antibiotics and she is no longer quarantined, Ha'aretz reported.
She checked herself into Shaare Tzedek Friday after spiking a high fever.
Almost 2,000 West Africans have died in the latest outbreak of the deadly illness.
No commercially available drugs are available to treat Ebola and most people who contract it die. Survival odds improve somewhat with good supportive care, including IV fluids and nutrition.
An experimental drug was given to two US medical workers who contracted Ebola while working in West Africa. The drug appeared to stop Ebola’s progress cold and heal the two patients, but no more doses of the drug are available, and it could be months before a supply can be manufactured.
Ebola is only transmitted by bodily fluids while the carrier is actively ill. Health care workers must wear layers of special protective clothing to prevent transmission while caring for ill patients.
