Israel’s High Court of Justice ordered government to close the Holot detention facility for African asylum-seekers within 90 days and it voided an amendment to Israel’s Anti-Infiltration Law, passed by the Knesset nine months ago. That amendment allowed Israel to incarcerate without trial anyone who enters the country illegally.

Israel’s High Court of Justice ordered government to close the Holot detention facility for African asylum-seekers within 90 days, Ha’aretz reported, and it voided an amendment to Israel’s Anti-Infiltration Law, passed by the Knesset nine months ago. That amendment allowed Israel to incarcerate without trial anyone who enters the country illegally.

Approximately 2,000 African asylum-seekers, almost all from Eritrea and Sudan, are now detained at Holot without trial.

Israel habitually refuses to grant African asylum-seekers refugee status even when they clearly qualify for it and has taken often draconian steps to harass African asylum-seekers to try to force them to flee the country. At the same time, Israeli politicians – especially those from the right-wing and from haredi and Zionist Orthodox political parties – have used racist language to justify the government’s mistreatment the of African asylum-seekers.

Israel’s mistreatment of African asylum-seekers has drawn condemnation from international refugee authorities, experts in international law, and the UN along with drawing the ire of some Jewish activists in Israel – including several elderly Holocaust survivors.

But the worldwide Jewish community has been almost completely silent on the matter. When rare statements have been made by these communities and organizations, they have almost always been made in complete support of the government’s policies.

The nine-judge panel ruled 7-2 against that mistreatment today.

I am surprised that the court didn't rule that their innate human needs for financial support and affection oblige Israelis to allow the "refugees" to rape and steal in reasonable amounts. And of course it is simply inhumane and racist to impose restrictive Eurocentric standards of hygiene and sanitation on them, and to keep them from having loud barbecue parties in Levinski Park on Shabbat and Yom Kippur. I am sure that once the Guardian and the NYT get ahold of this horrifying oversight, lobbied by Shmarya, it will be fixed tout suite-we do not want to offend our masters, do we?

I think each one of them is entitled to a job as product manager at Intel or Microsoft. Otherwise, you can't very well blame them for strong-arm robbery. I mean, sure, the Jew my buddy saw staggering around South Tel Aviv bleeding from a knife wound in his stomach a couple of months ago probably would disagree (he didn't want to be robbed,) but if you take an abstract view, from the perspective of social justice, he kind of had it coming. Or, at least, these things can't be avoided. When a man illegally infiltrates into a country to make money and then finds that an IQ of 75 and his status as an illegal make it difficult for him to live as he wishes, who can blame him for stabbing some Jew in the gut for a few shekels? It's probably the fault of rightist extremists, if you really think about it.

When I got to the United States, it was by invitation, completely legally. Somehow, though times were hard, we got by without raping or stabbing anyone, or even stealing from them. Weird, huh? Also, we threw our garbage in the dumpster and refrained from defecating in the streets.

Now that I think about it, our behavior was evidence of a deeply internalized racism. By refusing to sneak into someone else's country, commit crimes and deface the landscape, we were implicitly saying that we were better than Africans! Disgusting. As though one culture or way of being could somehow be inherently better than another! I wish someone had cured us of our biases through some sort of mandatory re-education program, so I wouldn't have to carry them as a burden throughout my life. There are approx. 33 Arab states, and roughly 52 countries with strong Moslem majorities. wtf do the Israelis have to keep them on welfare until death?

And if there is not a legal way to force Egypt to keep their compatriots, why can Israel not close the borders, or even have Birthright Israel divert funds, and send them one way to US, where they can be settled in same cities with the Syrian refuges. Or perhaps the UN can co-ordinate with DHS or whatever criminal agency responsible, the resettlement to St. Paul and Minneapolis. Oshit should be in ecstasy, moslems and blacks all of the pre-requisites for converting the US into a nation under Shariah law. Are the welfare benefits not superior in US? These asylum seekers (and probably their children) will be on welfare the rest of their lives. Let the American taxpayer pay, why should the Israeli economy suffer? Ship the f'ers to the US. Dai v'gamarnu.

Even though, really they are not victims, but calculating and devious wanting to get all they can out of the system and have a better life. Israel is their 3rd choice, if they could get to the UK or USA they would go ASAP. Every week, there's stories of Eritreans and Sudanese trying to illegally cross the border from Calais, France to England. Even, France is not good enough for them as they have a harsher benefits system!

Nachos-I suspect you are being willfully dense for the sake of a little self-righteousness rush at others' expense, and that if these poor "refugees" were living in your neighborhood, raping grandmothers and committing robberies, all of a sudden you'd wake up. It's like what happened with Clarence Darrow at Swarthmore in 1953; he and his Quaker friends had been pushing very hard for "integration" of Catholic Irish, Polish and Italian neighborhoods, paying for black families to move in, pushing the PR, etc. Then one day he had to move, and decided the fitting thing to do would be to sell his house to a black family. The Quaker neighbors panicked, and beseeched him that this wasn't how one should treat his neighbors, that property values would drop, etc. He saw the light, sold the house to a nice white family for more than appraised value, and continued fighting the noble cause of integration...of others, explaining to them that there was nothing to fear, that scientific studies showed that when blacks move into a neighborhood, property values actually rise, quality of life increases, etc.

As to your questions-again, my family was invited into the US by the US government, and when we came there, we made it a better place, not a worse one. We did not come uninvited, and we refrained from raping and robbing the natives. Can you understand that subtle distinction, or do you need me to explain in more detail?

Most of the African immigrants in Israel came with the hope of moving on to a European country. The problem is the Europeans prefer Russian or Ukrainian immigrants over Africans and have shut their doors.
Europe is in big trouble demographically since the native population has a low birth rate and can't replace itself. They need immigrants just to replace their elderly population and fill jobs, particularly in elder care. Europe's first choices are Eastern Europeans, followed by North Africans and lastly by Africans.
One of the outcomes of the Holocaust in international law was easing immigration restrictions for those facing persecution -- but persecution is poorly defined (is it physical, economic or other?)
Israel is a prisoner of this ambiguity. It must by international law abide by laws protecting immigrants, but it cannot allow itself to be overwhelmed. The immigrants themselves would like to work if given the opportunity, but most shun agricultural work. They would work in construction if that work was available, but most construction workers in Israel are Palestinian - one of the ways Israel supports the PA and even some of the folks in Gaza.
What is needed is a third country wiling to take on the burden of absorbing these immigrants and serving as a safety valve for this migrant pressure. So far no one is volunteering and the UN has per usual, proven to be useless.
BTW, most of the African asylum seekers are animists or Christian, not Muslim. As for criminal behavior among immigrants, Jack the Ripper may well have been a Polish Jewish immigrant, and Jewish Gangsters were used as an excuse to restrict Jewish immigration to the US. An individuals behavior is his own responsibility, but to vilify and entire class of people because of the actions of a few - well some would call that racism.
