A two-year-old boy died Friday in the Israeli town of Yehud after his mother, rushing to prepare for Shabbat, “forgot” him in her car for about 40 minutes while she shopped inside a store for Shabbat items.

According to a report in the Jerusalem Post, Magen David Adom paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive the chid, who was unresponsive, had no pulse, and had burns from the metal on his car seat.

The child was rushed to Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer and was pronounced dead. The cause of death is reportedly heat prostration and asphyxiation.

I’m no engineer but it seems that some kind of motion or heat sensor or other technology could be developed that could sense the presence of a child left behind in the car. After all, our cars remind us if we leave on the headlines or forget to buckle up.

An alarm, such as the car horn, would sound while the windows would be immediately opened. If an adult does not return immediately to get the child, the system would automatically dial 911. It’s high time that some such safety features become standard features of automobiles. We need to put an end to these horrific tragedies.
