US President Barack Obama has authorized "targeted" US airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq and air drops of humanitarian supplies to religious minorities, primarily Yazidis and Christians but also Shiites , who fled their homes as approaching Islamic State fighters threatened to massacre them.

US President Barack Obama has authorized "targeted" US airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq and air drops of humanitarian supplies to religious minorities, primarily Yazidis and Christians but also Shiites , who fled their homes as approaching Islamic State fighters threatened to massacre them unless they convert to Sunni Islam.

Obama said the US was acting to prevent a "potential act of genocide."

Islamic State militants are advancing toward the Kurdish capital Arbil and are using advanced US weapons captured from the US-trained and US-armed Iraqi Army, which essentially abandoned them and fled rather than fight.

"We can act carefully and responsibly to prevent a potential act of genocide. I’ve therefore authorized targeted airstrikes if necessary,” Obama told reporters tonight.

The Kurdish Army, which has been a staunch ally of the US, is highly skilled but lacks modern weapons because the US has failed to provide them, in large part because Turkey, a NATO member state, opposes it. Some of the weapons the US gave to Iraq were supposed to be transferred to the Kurds, but were not.

US Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham issued a statement moments ago that is sharply critical of Obama and insisting the time for halfway measures is long since past. The senators want a stronger comprehemsive policy to be immediately implemented in Iraq and US allies there to be strengthened.

Meanwhile, rocket warning sirens sounded in southern Israel tonight as at least two mortars were allegedly fired from Gaza into Israel. Both reportedly fell in open areas and did no damage to buildings or people.

The incident happened only hours before the 72-hour Egypt-brokered humanitarian cease fire is slated to end.

The military wing of Hamas is refusing to extend the cease fire and negotiate a long term truce unless all of its demands, including the opening of all Gaza borders and the complete withdrawal of all Israeli troops, are met first.

Israel is thought unlikely to respond to that mortar fire unless the cease fire ends this morning at 8:00 am Israel Time even though the IDF has declared the cease fire to over as a result of the mortar fire.

Israel is reportedly planning to declare Gaza “enemy territory” to avoid having to make government payment to Gazans who lost their homes nd other property in the war.

It is clear that this is merely a ruse for the US to kill as many Iraqi civilians as they can. ISIS is a legitimate political force. The problem is that ISIS is not recognized as the peace partner it could be. We should give ISIS lots of money and show them respect. after all, they would have made themselves part of a pluralistic Iraqi government if the US had not been governing through puppets.

Yessiry, it is only racism in the US that drives this right wing driven US government to attack the helpless ISIS militants.
