A haredi get refuser in London, England has been found guilty of stalking and harassing his estranged wife. But he still won't give her a Jewish religious divorce known as a get.

A haredi get refuser in London, England has been found guilty of stalking and harassing his estranged wife, the JC reported.

Yossi Elkoubi was convicted last Friday of stalking and harassing Rifka Meyer, whom he married in a religious ceremony in 2009 without obtaining a civil marriage permit.

Elkoubi refuses to grant Meyer a Jewish religious divorce called a get. According to Orthodox Jewish law, without a get, Meyer cannot remarry or even date.

Last year, a court issued a restraining order against Elkoubi banning him from communicating with her, coming within 100 metres of her home, or entering the wig salon she runs.

Elkoubi appears to have respected that order but used other tactics to intimidate and stalk Meyer, including driving by the wig salon and attempting to communicate with her through gestures.

In one incident, Elkoubi pulled up alongside a car in which Elkoubi’s first wife, Hadassah Elkoubi, and Meyer were sitting. The two women are close friends. Elkoubi sat there “staring and staring” at the two women. Meyer said the incident was “extremely intimidating…He’s always there…I feel he is still trying to control me.”

Hadassah Elkoubi testified her ex-husband’s behavior was extremely intimidating.

“I looked back a few seconds later and he was still there. I knew it was only a minute but it felt like a very long time,” she reportedly testified.

Meyer also testified that Elkoubi went to the Kosher Kingdom supermarket twice on Thursday evenings even though he knew she shopped there at that time.

In the second of those incidents, Elkoubi was talking to a friend, Avi Yodaiken, inside the supermarket. He had no shopping cart and showed no evidence of actually shopping.

He was standing there with “the usual smirk” on his face, Meyer testified.

In response, Meyer said she yelled out, “Do you know that this person hasn’t given me a get?”

Yodaiken testified that when Meyer saw Elkoubi, she drew her finger over her throat to imitate a throat slashing.

A statement from Dayan Aharon Dovid Dunner was read to the court in which Dunner, whom Elkoubi and Meyer went to for mediation last year, wrote that when Meyer was leaving, she told Elkoubi that “the only way I will get a get from you is by killing you.”

Jonathan Goldberg, a prominent attorney well-known in London’s Jewish community who often represents accused spousal abusers and child molesters, represented Elkoubi at trial.

He reportedly accused Hadassah Elkoubi and Meyer of being “thick as thieves” and of making a “big deal” out of nothing.

“You are using this court for revenge, as is your friend Hadassah,” Goldberg reportedly said to Meyer as she testified.

“Absolutely not,” Meyer responded.

Elkoubi claimed the encounters with his wife all happened by chance and he had not given her a get because he still loves her.

“I want to reconcile. My ex-wife has come between us,” he reportedly testified.

Elkoubi also insisted he wasn’t smirking when he saw her.

“I don’t smirk, I smile,” Elkoubi insisted.

Elkoubi also claimed he shopped in Kosher Kingdom “two hundred to three hundred times” during the last year and the encounters there with Elkoubi were only by chance.

He also claimed he spotted his ex-wife’s car and stopped to speak to her about one of their children, but he drove away when he realized Meyer was there in the car with her.

Elkoubi, who has had previous criminal allegations leveled at him but was acquitted of them, was found guilty this time and will reportedly be sentenced later this month.

Goldberg told the JC Elkoubi would appeal the conviction.

Jonathan Goldberg is a pretty heavy hitter in serious criminal cases including murders (although he is getting on a bit now).
