A senior Ashkenazi haredi rabbi, Yitzchak Zilberstein, claims Hamas terror tunnels were only dug after the death of supreme Ashkenazi haredi leader Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, and that Elyashiv’s Torah study and prayer had protected Israel from Hamas while Elyashiv was living, but his death allowed Hamas to attack.

A senior Ashkenazi haredi rabbi, Yitzchok Zilberstein, claims Hamas terror tunnels were only dug after the death of supreme Ashkenazi haredi leader Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, and that Elyashiv’s Torah study and prayer had protected Israel from Hamas while Elyashiv was living, but his death allowed Hamas to attack, the haredi news website Kikar HaShabbat reported.

Zilberstein was a son-in-law of Elyashiv.

Elyashiv died in July 2012.

During a Torah lecture given last Saturday before the third Shabbat meal in the Ramat Elchanan neighborhood of Bnei Brak, Zilberstein – who is a member of the United Torah Judaism Party’s Council of Torah Sages – said times are very tough for the people of Israel because of the security complicated situation, and he asked the audience to strengthen their Torah study and add to the good mitzvot (Torah commandments) they are already doing.

Zilberstein said that the Babylonian Talmud in
Tractate Moed Katan 25b speaks about difficulties that followed the passing of the previous generation of leading rabbis and talks about underground cities used by thieves to harass and hurt the local population.

Zilberstein said that, say what you will, but it is amazing that Hamas only started to build terror tunnels the year Elyashiv died, and that happened because the Divine protection of the people of Israel weakened when Elyahiv fell ill and weakened more when he passed away several months later.

Zilberstein said that military experts say the tunnels were dug about 3 years ago.

"Just in this period, Maran [Elyashiv] weakened…and accelerated [after he died] until we what we see today,” Zilberstein claimed, adding that the Talmud shows that “when [Elyahiv] died, [the defense he provided] stopped and [Hamas] dug underground and started to damage all Israel."

"It's really having the [wisdom of the] Talmud vividly [shown for all to see],” Zilberstein said.

Like Elyashiv, Zilberstein and the rest of haredi rabbinic leadership vehemently oppose the military draft of haredi yeshiva students and have ordered their followers to refuse to serve in the IDF if drafted.

For decades, non-haredi Israelis have been compelled to serve in the IDF and must do so at age 18 before attending college or technical schools or working.

Israel adopted a new military draft law this spring that, on paper at least, compels a minority of haredi men of draft age to serve in the military. Haredi leaders vehemently opposed that law and threatened to fight a civil war against the government to prevent it from being implemented, in part claiming that haredi Torah study is what really protects Jews and the Land of Israel, and that having haredim serve in the IDF would weaken that protection.

It always amazes me how people can make such absurd claims. Let's say for a second that he is right, how would he know?

This is not to take anything away from Rav Elyashiv, ZT"L, but many incidents took place during his lifetime too.

It would seem to me that Klal Yisroel must have some merit today, that all these nissim are taking place and the extent of the tunnels were found and B"H, disaster was averted.

People who make these statement without real knowledge of what they are saying only diminish themselves.

It is foolish to ignore the historical evidence (even if you are an atheist and deny the divine origin of the Torah) that there is something which defies ordinary explanations.

This Rabbi is well within his rights - from an historical and Religious standpoint to make the statements he made.
