A haredi woman in Borough Park, Brooklyn lived in a small, cramped apartment for up to three years with her mother’s dead body, the New York Post reported today.

28-year-old Chava Stirn reportedly propped her mother’s dead body up and ate dinner with her every night. She also slept next to her mother’s skeleton.

Stirn dressed like her mother, as well, wearing the same black outfit and shoes her mother Susie Rosenthal was wearing when she died.

Stirn kept the bones of Rosenthal on a pile of trash bags in the kitchen.

The horrific and bizarre situation was only discovered when the apartment building’s superintendent needed to investigate a leak Monday afternoon, police sources told the Post.

Stirn would not let him in and emergency workers eventually had to break down the door.

When they finally gained entry, the reportedly found Stirn sitting in a chair, disheveled, amid waist-high heaps of trash, police sources reportedly said, noting the body could have been there for as long as two to three years.

For years, Stirn never left the apartment and refused to allow anyone to enter, neighbors – who frequently heard strange noises and screaming coming from the apartment – told the paper.

“When I listened, she was screaming…[She yelled] ‘I kill myself, I kill myself!’” Malka Lerner, a 41-year-old neighbor, told the Post.

Lerner apparently never called police.

“I never saw her or her mother. They never came out. I never saw the door open,” another neighbor said.

A relative would occasionally leave food for Stirn at the door.

Stirn thought Rosenthal had “left her there to die,” a police source reportedly said.

She was reportedly taken to Maimonides Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.

The cause of her mother’s death is yet to be determined.

It is very sad. I can't believe that the neighbors were so detached that they never realized that something was wrong in that apartment. New York is a sick and perverted place where concern for others is non-existent. You can tell by the mounds of trash and effluent lining the streets.

I would not so readily imply such innocence. This phenomenom is well known in the UK as various pension providers both state and private to say nothing of economic housing providers will aver.

What is puzzling and perhaps is ominous, is if she were a member of a frum community why no one commented on the fact that the mother had not been seen for 3 years. One of the advantages of living in a community - is that people notice absences.But I suppose if the women are kept locked up and out of sight and away from Shul perhaps this is not so surprising.

Still I am only making a guess implying bad faith which perhaps is a fault pervading the whole of this site. Long may it continue - provided we remind ourselves of this fact.

And to all those mocking Shmarya - there is a story here and that is a story of the Chareidi neighbors who heard and saw and actually lived in close proximity to a terrible situation and DID NOTHING. And then admitted to that too. That is the story here. Do you not see a lesson? This is what should be taught in school - not how high a 3 year old's socks must be!

This is not a story of a building in Manhattan where noone knows each other - by design. This is the story of neighbors (and relatives and teachers and others- ALL FRUM- who were supposed to do something but didnt).

Who were this woman's teachers in school, and was she treated for mental illness as a teenager? Did the mother have any friends? Where were they?

First of all-- how did she cover the stench? Did noone realize? How could that be? Where was the landlord? And what happened to the rotting meat so that there's only bones left???

And how did this woman get food if she never left the house? How did she qualify for public assistance? Who paid the bills and rent or taxes (if owned) on her apartment?
