Haredi Wedding Hall Installs Mechitza In Elevator To Gender Segregate Passengers

The Armonot Chen wedding hall in the heavily haredi Givat Shaul neighborhood of Jerusalem has set up a so-called mehadrin elevator with a mechitza – in this case, a curtain – down the middle of the car to gender-segregate women from men, Yeshiva World reported based on a report on the Israeli news website Walla! News.
The hall’s owner, Yosef Cohen – who sees nothing wrong with the offering this “service” – says use of the elevator mechitza is optional and is only used at the request of the person renting the hall.
Cohen also said that on their wedding days, many people try to be especially careful in guarding their eyes from seeing things they should not see, and this is just a way of assisting them with that.
He noted that a Bnei Brak wedding hall has two elevators, one designated for men only and the other designated for women. But when Cohen purchased the Givat Shaul hall, it only had one elevator, and he though installing an optional mechitza was a reasonable solution.
Israel’s High Court of Justice has already prohibited similar gender segregation on public buses and sidewalks.
However, it is unclear how the court would view gender segregation in the wedding hall’s elevator.
Now THIS will bring the geulah!

I am just upset that I didn't think of that first.
No matter how ridiculous my imagination is to think up of new chumres, they somehow manage to out-rediculous me...

They should put up one of those shower curtains that re-enacts the bloody Psycho stabbing.

Why are there woman at the simcha hall altogether? Is their presence strictly necessary? Does it make the groom happier on his wedding day to know there were so and so many women behind the partition? The actual bride they can briefly escort inside under a horse blanket to complete the Mitzvah Tantz, or in truth, she can remain out in the parking lot if the gartle stretches far enough, but this whole segregated elevator is only because of the licentious allowance for the impure gender to attend holy celebrations in the first place. /sarcasm.

These mechitza-mad rabbis remove any opportunities for single Jewish people of the opposite sex to meet each other and strike up a conversation – even at Jewish events. Then they cry about the high rate of intermarriage!
How can these rabbis be so sure that God was not planning to arrange a shidduch of two people on this very elevator?

As I have said before, just when you think they can't do anything more bizarre, they manage to outdo themselves. Just what will they think of next?

One more thing - does the elevator have dual destination buttons or just one set? If one, how does the gender without the buttons (I assume female...) press the button for their floor?

Looking at the picture again it seems there is only one set of buttons. I think the curtain is not enough either. There should never be mixed genders in the elevator at the same time. What if the elevator broke down and then it became Shabbos and the occupants couldn't be rescued for 25 hrs? There is a strong possibility that mixed dancing would ensue.

The lady could always tell her husband to press the button for her.
Weddings do not usually take place on Friday, so that is out.
Lechatchila the elevator should have a proper wall so that Yichud won't take place, and the mens mirror should be covered.

"...Cohen also said that on their wedding days, many people try to be especially careful in guarding their eyes from seeing things they should not see..."
Umm - on a man's wedding day isn't he marrying one of those "things" he supposedly shouldn't see? They're nuckin' futs.

The women should be required to take the stairs, and let the elevator be for men only.

They should out a GloryHole in the curtain!

Someone should call the city and file a complaint immediately. That is bound to violate some sort of fire code or something. Don't they have elevator inspectors?

Rules, regulations and laws are for Goyim.

Don't know why everyone is up n arms!! The Hasidim always did it through a sheet anyway! And now they could grope the ladies through the curtain and protect their anonymity! It's hot! they are wild we maniacs!! Love those hasids!

It's a private hall. They can do what they want. And if you don't like it, don't attend any simchas there.

This is brilliant! The shower curtain makes it easier to anonymously grope, I mean, "accidentally bump into," the person on the other side, just like they do on the Frum Bus from Monsey.
This is one Chumrah I can get behind.
