Because they are 'MODERN.' End of story.
The letter (whose font is so small it might make me get glasses, so I'm not going to study it in more depth) even suggests that those parents who want their children to wear heavy plastic glasses because of their durability, can go fly a kite. They can buy and replace the approved metal framed glasses (suitable for sedentary adults) or they can keep their kids home from school.
Since the Squire of New Square approves setting people on fire for davening in another shul, one can only imagine what they'll do to parents who enroll their glasses-wearing children in another school.

These Hasidic groups are not benign. Their leaderships have evolved into organized crime. They derive much of their power from their political clout (voting block) and use coercive measures (possibly violating civil rights) to keep their people in line. These glasses are banned for one and only one reason. People look like friggin' monkeys wearing those plastic specs. They are laughing stock of any normal person.
