Two haredi yeshiva students in the twenties were reportedly arrested in Spain early last week after allegedly smuggling drugs into the country. The two were reportedly on their from Morocco to Israel when the drugs were discovered.
The pair, who were allegedly arrested Tuesday but were not allowed to call their families until Friday, reportedly say they had no idea the drugs were in their possession.
A series of similar incidents with haredi yeshiva students took place in Japan, Europe and South America during the last decade. In most of the incidents the students claimed to be unaware of the drugs and said they were only carrying a package for a friend or community leader.
The religious names of the two students are reportedly Nosson ben Edna and Yosef ben Rita.
I'm no haredi apologist by any means, but there was indeed a story of two people who I knew of who were duped into smuggling drugs across the border and caught and arrested (I heard the story third hand but from a believable source). Of course the person who duped them was also 'frum' but there is a possibility that these are not the real perpetrators and they were really duped.

I always wonder if the frumma try to get away with these things because they are so skillful in deception.
In any case this is why you asked at most airports if you packed your bags yourself and/or are aware of the contents.
And I thought EVERYONE knew you don't carry packages for others unless you are 100% sure of the contents.

i think that the reason that some of these younger 'frum' people could get duped is because they are taught to be so obedient and revere their elders without question. When an older 'frum' person who they know asks them to do something most normal functioning human beings would be skeptical of, they of course comply. Not saying that this was the case here, but I can totally see it happening.

Nosson ben Edna and Yosef ben Rita??????
Edna & Rita????
And named after their mothers?
You have got to be kidding !
These look like fake names - they may be trying to come across as Hairydim to dupe the authorities?

I am sorry there is no excuse in 2014 to take a unidentified package on a plane to another country no excuse

Young Haredim have been involved in drug smuggling for years. Watch the trailer for "Holy Rollers" here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1143896/ It was filmed in 2010 and starred Jessie Eisenberg, who also played Mark Zuckerberg in the movie "The Social Network".

"And named after their mothers?"
The source of the names is a tweet mentioning recitation of Tehillim on their behalf. For "Mi Sheberach" you use the mother's name, right? So maybe the mother's name is also the custom when reciting Tehillim for prisoners?

at airports , the haredi are the ones to be checked out and thoroughly searched
from head to toes , including inside their underwears and more , more than any reg/secular persons .
the haredi are the ones who carry drugs .

If their mother's names are Edna and Rita then they must be BTs so should have known better from previous lives.

Actually, they could easily be Sefardim. It is very common for Sefardi haredi women to have European or Arabic names only.

if I lived in Spain I would leave now. God will take his anger out on Spain like he did against Japan.

There could be another scenario...
These Heredim were enlisted as to be targets...to be informed on...
Then they will likely overlook someone else carrying drugs.
A couple of years in a Spanish prison will do them good

It appears they were offered a free rental vehicle on condition they return it in Madrid. They were asked to transport a vehicle, unaware of what they were carrying, an illegal substance. Some are calling this the new Japan bochrim case.

Ouch. Narcotics traffickers don't get easy sentences in foreign courts. And very few judges or juries (if they do trial by jury in that country; I don't know if they do or not) are going to believe the "we were just carrying the suitcase as a favor"......
....that just does not work in this day and age, and those guys are going to do time....
Ouch.

If these young people had lived at a different time they would have been drinking cool aid in Jim Jones' compound. To say you didnt know what you were carrying onto a plane is so stupid it defies imagination. It could have been a bomb instead of drugs. If they aren't arrested for drug smuggling they should be arrested for stupdity.
