Murdered Satmar slumlord Menachem “Max” Stark died without leaving a will, the New York Daily News reported.
Stark’s widow Bashie was reportedly appointed appointed administrator of his estate by the Brooklyn Surrogate’s Court Monday. Stark’s seven children are now listed as beneficiaries.
Bashie Stark is “restricted from collecting and administering more than $10,000…without further order from this court,” Monday’s court order appointing her administrator reportedly reads.
“The assets of the estate are unknown,” Bashie Stark’s lawyer reportedly wrote in a court filing last month.
Stark allegedly illicitly took at least $3.6 million from accounts linked to the $40 million bankruptcy of one of the properties he owned with business partner Israel “Sam” Perlmutter. Much of it was stolen in weeks leading up to his January 2 kidnapping.
Stark was found murdered the next day.
Stark and Perlmutter reportedly also owed tens of thousands (if not millions) of dollars to various creditors outside the bankruptcy, from small time contractors to larger scale lenders.
Stark also allegedly operated as a loan shark, offering bridge loans at high rates of interest to local businessmen.
Perlmutter went into seclusion after Stark’s kidnapping, claiming he feared for his own life.
Police have yet to make an arrest in the case, despite allegedly locating the vehicle used in the kidnapping and speaking to its owners and others with access to it.
According to court records, the bankruptcy now appears to be close to a resolution. Perlmutter and a group of what the Daily News calls “moneymen” have reportedly agreed repay creditors, the Daily News reported.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for next Tuesday.
