The Kiryas Joel Satmar Rebbe Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum compared Israeli members of Knesset who voted for the new draft law to the Nazis, Matzav reported.

“Just as we were saved from the Holocaust and the Nazis, so will we be saved from army service,” Teitelbaum reportedly said.

In reality, the vast majority of Satmar hasidim were not saved from the Nazis. Instead, they were murdered in Auschwitz or in forced labor camps.

Teitelbaum’s great uncle, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, was the Satmar Rebbe during the Holocaust. He was rescued by Zionists.

On the night of the first seder his great nephew Aharon Teitelbaum began reciting the paragraph of Vehi She’amda that says in part that in every generation people have risen up to destroy us, but God has always saved us from their from them. Teitelbaum chose that moment to pause to compare Israeli politicians and non-haredi Israelis to the Nazis.

Using a single bottle of wine, they could bribe him, and when he imbibed, the Jews had some respite. Satmar has spread that lie to try to obscure the fact that Yoelish was saved by Zionists and to obscure the fact that many more Jews who did not listen to the advice, orders and theology of your rebbe survived the Holocaust than those who did. Instead of listening to Teitelbaum's hate messages, they left for Palestine, America or wherever else they could. And then much later, when immigration to the US and Palestine became difficult, more of them tried to hide in the mountains, get to Turkey, etc.

Very few people survived either way compared to the number that was killed. But it was far better to not listen to Yoel Teitelbaum than it was to listen to him.

lj, you simply do not understand the dangers of social insularity as practiced by Hareidim.

In normal times, a horse is a valuable thing to have and its owner would take great care to remember to feed it.

However if a town is under military siege, the horse stops being a valuable asset (since there is nowhere it can go and little for it to carry) but becomes an economic burden (since it still needs to eat). The horse owner will have little choice but to kill that animal as it is in competition with him for what little food is available.

The Hareidi model of social insularity follows that of a horse and its owner. In normal times, the horse and owner do not socialize (just as a Jew and gentile should not) but the horse provides enough of a benefit to make the owner accept the cost of ownership so they can 'get along'.

However that Hareidi model became unstuck during WWII. The Allies quickly realized that in order to defeat Nazi Germany with the least cost in blood and gold to their own people, they would need to place occupied Europe under blockade and siege, destroy its economy and starve its people. It was also obvious that just as the Germans would kill their horses during a siege because they became a immense burden rather than an asset so as not to be compete for scarce food resources, so would Jews be killed. It was inevitable and forseeable that the Jews would be killed by Germans so as to lessen the effects of the Allied siege on them. No society under siege would share scares resources with outsiders.

The whole Haredi Weissmandl myth is based on the idea that the Allies could have been persuaded to partially lift their blockade and siege (thus prolonging the war at cost to Allied soldiers lives) so as to stop they being the worst victims of it. That was never going to happen. Total War is war without mercy. The Allies were fully aware that German babies would be innocent victims of any siege and aerial bombing, but that did not deter them.

By calling for insularity and rejecting modernity, the Chosam Sofer laid the first bricks on the road to Aushwitz but insulating Jews from general society. That may just about work in good times but will be disastrous in bad times. The Neturei Karta helpfully maintain a website which records for posterity the names of the rabbis who finished that road.

The Satmar Rebbe was saved by ZIONIST Rudolph Kasztner who arranged for that train to freedom.

Kastner Affair

Israel (Rudolf) Kastner (1906–1957), who was of Jewish-Hungarian origin, was a clerk at the Ministry of Trade and Industry and a candidate on behalf of Mapai in the elections for the Second Knesset. In 1953 he was accused by Malchiel Gruenwald of collaboration with the Nazis during the Second World War: The allegations included concealing information on the extermination plans of the Jewish community in order to save approximately 1,700 of his friends and family, partnering with Nazi war criminal Kurt Becher, and testifying in his favor in the Nuremberg trials.

Kastner sued Gruenwald for libel, and Gruenwald was defended by attorney Shmuel Tamir. The District Court Judge who dealt with the lawsuit was Benjamin Halevi (both Halevi and Tamir were later Members of the Knesset). Developments in the trial brought about the involvement of Attorney General Haim Cohen. In June 1955, Justice Halevi ruled that Gruenwald’s allegations of Kastner’s collaboration with the Nazis were founded and that “Kastner sold his soul to the Satan.” He also declared that Kastner committed perjury in Becher’s trial in Nuremberg. Kastner’s supporters claimed he was a hero, acting to save as many Jews as he could – despite the objective risks and emotional difficulty in collaborating with Nazis such as Adolf Eichmann.

Since the trial had implications on the Mapai party, the Government decided to appeal on Kastner’s behalf to the Supreme Court. On May 28th 1955, Herut and Maki factions presented no-confidence motions, in which the General Zionists, a coalition member, abstained - leading to Prime Minister Sharett’s resignation.

In the ensuing uproar, while ongoing discussions on the appeal were held, Kastner was shot in March 1957 by young nationalist extremists. He died of his wounds two weeks later and his murder is considered to be the first political assassination in the State of Israel. In January 1958, the Supreme Court, in a majority of 3 to 2, overturned the judgment against Kastner. The Court’s decision continued to say that under certain circumstances, a leader is obligated to withhold information from the public. As Oskar Schindler, who knew Kasztner, said, Kasztner was the bravest man he had ever known.
