Haredi Mayor Finally Condemns Violent Haredi Modesty Attack On Woman

The haredi mayor of Beit Shemesh, Rabbi Moshe Abutbol, has belatedly condemned a haredi modesty attack against a woman more than one week after the well-publicized incident took place, the JTA reported.
The woman, who is Modern Orthodox, was waiting for a bus with her three-year-old daughter when a haredi man beat her up for wearing a skirt he found to be too short.
It took Abutbul a week to issue his condemnation.
“I strongly condemn this violent incident, something that is forbidden according to the law and according to the Torah. I have asked the chief of police in Beit Shemesh to strongly pursue this case. I also addressed the entire city police force and underlined my policy of zero tolerance to violence,” Abutbol said Tuesday.
Abutbol, a member of the Sefardi haredi Shas Party, has long been accused by non-haredi residents of failure to care for their needs while disproportionately diverting their tax dollars to the local haredi community. He is also notorious for his failure to condemn or try to stop haredi violence against non-haredi women and children in the city.
Abutbol’s sudden change in attitude may be due a criminal investigation into alleged election fraud committed by haredim, including a close associate of the mayor. Israel’s High Court of Justice was forced to order a new election because of the widespread fraud. Abutbol won the revote by a narrow margin after US haredi rabbis, acting on the orders of Israeli haredi rabbinic leaders, ordered their followers living in Beit Shemesh – the vast majority of whom strongly oppose Abutbol – to vote for him, calling the vote a life or death issue.
Modesty signs ordering women to walk only on one side of the street and to dress in certain ways still are posted on public property in the city, despite a High Court of Justice order prohibiting them and violent attacks against women and girls thought by haredim to be immodestly dressed are common, while arrests of the haredi perpetrators are rare.

This changes nothing - the facts on the ground there in Beit Shemesh are same as ever, attitudes are unchanged and this will happen again and again. A woman there should carry Mace.

The hassidishe side of bet shemesh is a big mental ward, they are zombified automatons.

Mace works or tasers or sling shots. These people are no better than wild beasts, to paraphrase another poster. The Haredi bastard in this case was judge, jury and executioner. My belief is that had circumstances allowed, he would have likely raped his victim. These pieces of human filth have such decidedly bizarre world views that give them a green light in enforcing their twisted belief system on others. This will happen again. The circumstances may be dire next time, and that is why it is suggested that women walking in Beit Shemesh or waiting on busses or taxis should be armed. There is no telling what part of a random woman standing waiting for a bus might spur one of these incomplete beings into violence.

SML - if a woman there were indeed to mace an attacker, wanna bet that she'd be the one arrested?

Sarek - Maybe, but the next one of these creeps with such notions would think twice. I'm hoping one day one of them will try it on a well trained IDF woman who'll hand him his head and maybe, we should be so lucky, his balls. Birth control, Haredi style.

@Alter Kocker, @Sarek, and @SML -----> I could not agree more.
I'm not sure what the law is in Israel, but in most American jurisdictions, if you have a fear of imminent death or serious bodily injury, you can use deadly force to protect yourself or someone else about to be subjected to death or SBI.
I was under the impression that most Israelis walked around "strapped" anyway. (Don't remember where I read or heard that, however) So anyway, the next time Mr. Religious fanatic starts beating on some "curveh", if she takes out her Glock Nine and puts one right in his kneecap, or in his torso, hopefully then 1) he'll see the error of his ways, and 2) he and his fellow purveyors of holiness will think twice about beating up women.
You know, as an Officer of the Court, I don't like advocating the use of violence. It goes against both the way I was raised and the things that I was taught, both in the home and throughout my formal education.
And to a certain extent, I'm somewhat repulsed by what I just wrote above.
But 1) there are some people who don't understand anything except the use of force,
and 2) while advocating violence is repugnant to me, the thought of a man beating up a woman is even more repugnant.
Back when I did criminal defense, I defended some (let's just say) "rough characters"- but none of them would have ever even thought to lay a hand on a woman. Did they traffic narcotics, drive drunk, use drugs, get in fights? Sure they did. That's how they became my clients. But strike a woman?
Never.

@RJB: Those were old-school tough guys. Goodfellas. The newer crop could care less, as in: the Mexican cartel guys, your local pimp and wannabes like sissy Haredim. One good edge-of-the hand chop to the Adam's apple, a knee to the groin and a forcible face-plant on the pavement would cure that one Haredi of any notions of male superiority he might have been harboring. Actually a good rip to the face with sharp female nails might have done it equally as well.
