First Rabbinically Approved Safe Sex Anti-HIV Information Published In Israel

Approximately 500 people in Israel were infected with HIV in 2012, Ynet reports, an increase from the number in 2011 which itself was an increase over the number in 2010.

About 150 of those infected in 2012 are reportedly homosexual men – a number of whom are Orthodox men who are not taught about sexual intercourse, contraceptives and the risks of unprotected sex in their schools and communities.

To try to remedy this problem, the Israel AIDS Task Force in conjunction with Havruta, an organization of Orthodox members of the LGBT community,
has just published the first rabbinically approved booklet on safe sex and HIV specifically for Orthodox communities.
 
"We must understand in the clearest manner that silence has its price. When we fail to talk about a certain issue – it basically doesn't exist in our consciousness, and when it happens – the way to risky behavior is very short," the booklet's introduction, reportedly written by a rabbi and approved by other rabbis, says.
 
"The information is conveyed in the booklet in a way adjusted to the religious public. In other words, there are no revealing photos and the language is relatively subtle, although it does show men walking hand in hand. The absence of a discourse does not prevent infection. In a place where sex is not discussed, safe sex is not discussed either, and men and women who come from a religious background are not immune to infection. We hope that this move will cause other systems in the religious public to break the circle of silence,” " Adir Yanko of the Israel AIDS Task Force said.
 
"It's time for the religious public, its leaders and rabbis to look reality in the eye and start talking about sexual relations between men and about the way to avoid diseases," Havruta’s chairman, Eli Kaplan-Wildmann, added.

The booklet will be distributed at some Orthodox centers and will be given to Orthodox rabbis to help them offer advice and provide information to Orthodox members of the LGBT community.

I don't know how to break this to either one of you, but homosexuality is not a choice. A homosexual man does not/cannot control the fact that he is not attracted to, or aroused by women. Same for a lesbian woman.

I wonder how the pamphlet deals with the heterosexual population. Among non-Orthodox people, anti-AIDS advice starts with a pretty simple rule:

I assume the purpose of these booklets is making aware people of a risk that whosoever in this world - kosher, observer, devout or secular, bi, straight, gay, trans - could potentially go through undertaking unsafe sex intercourses.

The fact that school instruction in an orthodox environment is laking of sexual education is a very well known details, and a very sad one, too. A danger like HIV should never been ignored neither in secular nor in orthodox environment.

Keeping silence on issues is never the right choice, in my view. It you keep silence on an issue it does not mean that issue does not exist. Conversely, ignoring a fact produce the opposite result and allows it to became a bigger problem.

It's not questioned whether is right or wrong being gay, here; it's questioned wheather or not people should be aware of such lethal deceases that can be transmitted via sexual intercourse. And I repeat: both homosexual and heterosexual intercourses.

Therefore, there's no point in alarming that much if someone has a wise conduct. On the contrary, if someone doesn't, let him/her be at least aware of way to avoid getting HIV which goes "a little" beyond Halakha.
Basically, because: if an orthodox observer have - for instance - unsafe sexual intercourses (with either men or women or gay) at the end of his orgasm will probably go back to his wife/husband, to his home. I think that his/her wife/husband should at least be protected by his/her parter's ill-advised behavior. This protection could be provided by some genuine information that could - hopefully - provided that awareness needed to be more wary in some sad, horrible but yet realistic situations.

I have known a few modern Orthodox people who impressed me as intelligent, ethical, and reasonable people.

On the other hand, it is my understanding that Modern Orthodoxy is being completely overwhelmed and outmaneuvered by the ultra-Orthodox.

What is your view of this question?

Jeff, Since I am not Jewish (I came to this site while I was teaching at a Chabad girls' school and was trying to understand my working environment), I hesitate to criticize the Orthodox too much. My impression from my limited experience with this is that the ordinary, rank-and-file Orthodox are often quite likable--but the leaders *are* frequently sociopaths--and misogynistic sociopaths at that.
