DA Gives Satmar Hasid Who Threw Bleach In The Face Of Anti-Abuse Activist Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg No-Prison Plea Deal
"We changed the DA but we didn't change any behavior in the DA's office. The guy walks free…where is our protection?…They [Satmar] poured bleach on me because I'm a child activist," Rosenberg reportedly said after the sentence was handed down, claiming Schnitzler works at Satmar’s central Williamsburg synagogue and was sent to assault Rosenberg like "a hitman."

The name of the DA has changed but loathsome behavior has not.
New Brooklyn District attorney Kenneth Thompson has given Meilech Schnitzler, the Satmar man who threw a cup of bleach in the face of anti-child-sex-abuse activist Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg in December 2012 as Rosenberg walked past Schnitzler’s fish store has been given a five-year probation-only sentence, despite the fact that he could have blinded Rosenberg, the Daily News reported.
Schnitzler was originally charged with felony assault. He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and could have been sentenced to as much as seven years in prison. He got no jail time at all.
Rosenberg said he would have been happy if Schnitzler got six months in jail.
The attack took place days after Rosenberg accused the Schnitzler’s father of being a pedophile and in the immediate aftermath of the conviction of Satmar pedophile Nechemya Weberman.
Rosenberg campaigned for Thompson when he ran against former DA Charles J. Hynes, who was considered corrupt by Rosenberg and many other anti-abuse activists.
A source in the DA’s office [the Daily News has now changed this to read "law enforcement"] reportedly said that because Rosenberg immediately washed his eyes and therefore suffered no lasting injuries, and because Schnitzler had no prior criminal history, the sentence was appropriate. The source also told the Daily News that s/he questions whether Rosenberg actually helps sex victims or just advocates about abuse issues.

Leniency "because Rosenberg immediately washed his eyes and therefore suffered no lasting injuries"??? Why does the ATTACKER get credit for the fact that his victim was fortunately able to gain quick access to water to flush his eyes and save his own eyesight? Did Schnitzler quickly hand him a water bottle right after attacking him? Rosenberg foiled Schnitzler's attempt to blind him. Schnitzler's intent to destroy a man's eyesight was clear and he should be sentenced according to his evil intent, not according to the unintended outcome. That's why we have prisons.

Whether we like it or not, punishment is very generally meted out based on what did happen - not what might have happened.
I do not wholly agree with the sentence, but do understand it. Thompson has pressed several cases that Hynes ignored, and as importantly ended some cases Hynes continues to press in spite of a mountain of evidence that spoke to the innocence of the accused.
I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Please.
He dropped the charges against Kellner – but Michael Powell's NY Times coverage and Hella Winston's Jewish Week coverage are what is responsible for that.
As for this case, bleach was thrown in Nuchem's face and in his eye.
The only reason he isn't blind is because someone who saw what happened rushed out of another store with water and Nuchem flushed it.
There is nothing to "understand" here.
Thompson is wrong and must be considered to be probably corrupt.
