A synagogue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn held an iPhone smashing ceremony to "blot out the memory of Amalek," the villain of the biblical Book of Esther.

Lunacy to smash a valuable commodity item when they could be wiped clean and sold. My guess is they'll find some broken ones to smash and to make a show of while any good ones that are turned in they'll sell.

As others mentioned, smart phones have value (even old ones). In the case of iPhones, even if not working, they can be exchanged at Apple stores for as-good-as-new refurbished ones for a modest fee. At the very least, charities collect old phones and send them to Africa. (Of course, the frumma would no care for the African Goyim.)
