Dershowitz Threatens To Sue Hasidic Child Sex Abuse Whistleblower, Asks DA To Recuse Himself From Criminal Case
The New York Daily News is claiming an exclusive this morning for a story Hella Winston broke for the Jewish Week yesterday and which FailedMessiah.com picked up yesterday.
Not only that, the DN's story is full of other reporting that Winston broke over the years and, in the best New York media fashion, the DN does not credit her in any way.
It is hard to claim this is some type of accident when the DN's reporter, Oren Yaniv, knows Winston, knows she has broken many these stories and knows that his own reporting was often, shall we say, improperly skewed in ways Winston's reporting exposed.
Yaniv, however, does have two bits of news he can claim as his own.
First, he reports that the new Brooklyn DA does not intend to investigate the former prosecutors who wrongly – and, evidence would seem to show, intentionally and knowingly, as well – brought the charges against hasidic child sex abuse whistleblower Sam Kellner.
Second, we have this monstrosity from the ever seamy Dershowitz brothers:
…Lawyers for Lebovits will be in court Friday to demand that the judge won’t accept the dismissal and recuse Thompson, claiming the DA promised he’ll get rid of the Kellner case during the campaign.
“Any suggestion that they can’t get a conviction is strange, and what makes it stranger is that they have tape recordings (of the alleged extortion),” said one of the lawyers, Nathan Dershowitz.
“They have all the evidence they need.”
The Lebovits family is also considering filing a lawsuit against Kellner, which will allegedly paint him as a serial extortionist and point to evidence prosecutors ignored, sources said.
The tape Nathan Dershowitz is speaking about is tape made by the Lebovits family which was misrepresented by Lebovits' attorneys and his family as an extortion tape when, independent translators familiar with hasidic Yiddish say, the meaning of the tape is referring to a beit din procedure. Others familiar with the tape say the meaning is at best unclear, and it in no way supports charges against Kellner. The previous DA's 'translator' who verified the Dershowitz-Lebovits version of the tape's meaning spoke only YIVO Yiddish, not hasidic Yiddish, and was unfamiliar with hasidic culture. The Dershowitz brother grew up Orthodox in Brooklyn and can reasonably be classified as people who should have known better.
That Oren Yaniv 'forgets' to report the Lebovits narrative of the tape is more than arguably bullshit is just another in a long line of examples of Yaniv's hackery.
Update 10:05 am CST – The New York Times also has a story on this and, not surprisingly, it also fails to cite the the JW or Winston.
