New Draft Law Passes First Reading, Few If Any Real Haredim To Be Drafted, BTs, Ex-Haredim, Chabadniks To Be Cannon Fodder

Yair Ettinger of Ha'aretz describes the proposed 'universal' military draft bill, which passed its first reading in Knesset Wednesday night, this way:

"…Thanks to the involvement of the haredim and the intensive dialogue with [Knesset committee chairwoman Ayelet] Shaked [of the Zionist Orthodox HaBayit HaYehudi Party], including discussions between her and rabbis, no haredi in Israel will be conscripted against his will. That’s true mainly of the core of haredi society: the hasidim [i.e., hasidic groups that are part of the Agudat Israel faction of the United Torah Judaism Party and closely related groups], the Lithuanians and the Sephardi elite. This law, if the government is capable of passing it, “endangers” mainly the haredi social periphery – Chabadniks, those who have left religion [i.e., ex-haredim who haredi yeshiva heads will be allowed to count toward the haredi conscription quota], the newly religious [ba'al teshuvas], those belonging to the national religious [Zionist Orthodox] camp who join haredi society.…"

Everyone knows that the REAL reason these people don't want to go in the army is that they are terrified of getting killed or injured. The baloney about women singing are all red herrings. It's fine with them that everyone else in the country has to risk their necks and protect them while their mommies take them shopping to buy new white shirts and black hats. The government should require ALL physically and mentally fit Chasidim to do SOMETHING. Even if it's picking up garbage along the highways, changing the diapers of old people in a nursing home, do something slackers!

Haredim are cowards. This is all fine and good during peace time, but if a real shooting war starts, what is Israel prepared to do? Will it coddle these people? Will it let them get away with cowardly acts? Right now this is relatively benign, however Israel must reserve the right to call up every able bodied citizen put a rifle in their hand and tell them to shoot the enemy.

Those that refuse should be branded as cowards and shot.

This is at odds with every report I've read that say there will be a universal draft by 2017, that there will be penalties for dodging and the exemption number for exceptional students will be quite small.
