Purported evidence against former senior police officer Menashe Arviv that was given to Israel’s Attorney General by Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto’s attorneys is fabricated, Arviv's attorneys told Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein in a letter Friday, Ha'aretz reported.
Arviv resigned from the police after the AG and police refused to question him about the allegations and were poised to give Pinto – who claims he bribed Arviv – immunity in exchange for his testimony against him.
Arviv allegedly took and passed a privately administered polygraph examination, as well, but Weinstein and top police brass did not seem to care.
In Friday’s letter to Weinstein, Arviv responded to each allegation against him by Pinto and Pinto’s top aide (and relative), former pornographer Ben Zion Suky. Pinto and Suky are being civilly sued in New York for allegedly orchestrating the false arrest of an investor in one of Suky’s real estate deals there. The investor allegedly discovered Suky was looting the company, prompting Pinto and Suky to have him arrested on false charges and threaten him in other ways.
New York prosecutors have now reportedly asked the court here to dismiss those charges against Suky’s antagonist.
In Friday’s letter, Ariv notes that Pinto and his associates, including Suky, claimed they paid Arviv’s bill for a 22-night stay at Suky’s Metro Hotel in New York City. The hotel bill, given first to the AG and soon after to the media by Pinto’s attorneys, shows that Arviv stayed in the hotel from June 9 to June 14.
But Arviv’s diary shows that he was in Washington on official business at that time and documentation of his schedule was reportedly appended to Friday’s letter to the AG.
“The bill [you were given by Pinto’s attorneys] is obviously forged,” Arviv’s attorneys wrote.
Arviv says he stayed only one night at the hotel and insists he paid for that stay himself.
Arviv’s said they will be filing a police complaint in the against Pinto and Pinto’s associates who signed the allegedly false affidavits against Arviv that were given to the AG “charging them with forging documents, giving false affidavits, fabricating evidence, suborning witnesses and obstruction of justice,” Ha’aretz reported.
Copies of Friday’s letter to the AG were reportedly also sent to Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch and to Uri Carmel, who heads the unit in the Ministry of Justice that investigates police misconduct.
Many of Pinto’s allegations against Arviv involve Arviv’s son, Tzachi Arviv, who Pinto allegedly helped financially and in obtaining a US visa at Arviv’s request.
In Friday’s letter, the younger Arviv denied the claims, noting that he and his wife did not need any help because they had been sent by his wife’s parents to study in the US on an Australian visa. Friday’s letter says the younger Arviv, who is lives in Australia, passed a private polygraph test. The results of that test were also attached to Friday’s letter to AG.
Pinto also claimed to have arranged Arviv to purchase a ritzy North Tel Aviv apartment at a steep discount.
In Friday’s letter, Arviv’s attorneys insisted that Arviv had never purchased an apartment in Tel Aviv and in fact lives in a rented apartment.
“Rabbi Pinto and his associates are inventing wicked lies with regard to ‘benefits,’ in an attempt to postpone the rabbi’s arrival in Israel to stand trial for his alleged crimes, whether he returns in keeping with the decision of the attorney general or whether an extradition order is required. The tragedy in this case is that the state allowed a criminal, as you yourselves have called him, to delay his appearance in court by boldfaced lies, in such a way that he managed to cause a decorated [police] major general [Arviv] to resign, although he had committed no offenses,” Arviv’s attorneys wrote in Friday’s letter.
In that letter, Arviv reiterated his frequent call to be summoned by police for questioning so he could provide his version of events on the official record under penalty of perjury.
Pinto’s attorneys, called Arviv’s claims against Pinto “useless.”
“Anyone with eyes in his head understands that Maj. Gen. Arviv’s resignation from the police was not a noble act but a desperate one, by a person who wants to avoid an investigation at all costs. The letter by his representatives should be regarded in this light. We have no doubt that the attorney general and the state prosecutor will find a way to immediately order Maj. Gen. Arviv’s investigation by the unit that investigates police misconduct. Then the whole truth will come out,” Pinto’s attorneys said.
Police recently sent Pinto a 10-page document outlining a long list of crimes they allege Pinto committed, and warning him that he will soon be indicted for them.
