A Chabad rabbi from Hungary claims he has found 103 Torah scrolls stolen from Hungarian Jews during World War Two, Reuters reported.

The Chief Rabbi of Chabad’s Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation Slomo Koves said he found the Torahs in the Lenin Scientific Library in Nizhny Novgorod, located about 250 miles east of Moscow. Koves reportedly said he found the Torahs while following up on other previous research he had done at the Lenin Scientific Library on other Jewish artifacts looted during the Holocaust.

At a press conference in a synagogue in Budapest, Koves insisted he had no doubt the Torahs once belonged to Hungarian Jews, even though the scrolls were stripped of any markings – presumably Torah covers and other inscribed artifacts – to prove it.

Koves called the find historic and said that once the scrolls are restored, he would try to take them on a world tour.

"I think it's the first time in history when such a large collection of Judaica with 100 Torah scrolls in one place was discovered. And the fact that those scrolls are from Hungary has a special significance this year, which is the 70th year from 1944 when most Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz.…For seven decades they have been laying naked in those archives, while their only value is for a Jewish community to see them and use them every day.…We have initiated talks with the Russians, and we asked them that before we even talk about ownership we be allowed to restore them.…Right now we're not speaking about the ownership of the Torah scrolls because for the Jewish community that's not the most important question. Those Torah scrolls spiritually belong to us and no one can take it away from us…The most important question is who is going to use these Torah scrolls,” Koves said.

He also claimed to have the support of both the Hungarian government and the U.S. State Department.

Perhaps the Olympics Rabbi can discuss the matter with his buddy Putin on Friday night.

And I presume he will need some fundraising money to secure them from the government, and to restore them or suchlike.

He's such a (Nigerian) Prince

if this were only true. time will tell.

I'm sorry if I sound cynical but let's follow the money trail on this one.

No trail to follow. Say it costs $10,000 on average to restore the Torahs. But David, wouldn't you want to donate $20,000 and have your family members names on a Torah?

Multiply that times 103 Torahs and you have over $2 million. And maybe another $2 million to properly display them.

Now you could say that a certain percentage are pasul and cannot be restored but they might collect $20,000 for each of them anyway but that would leave out one minor detail. The Russian government owns them and they aren't going to ship them to Hungary.

So, the rabbi raises several million dollars but can't touch the Torahs. If you think the money gets returned, I have a waterfront beach house at 770 I would love to sell you.

I rather doubt it.

Here's a WWII photo of a U.S. Army chaplain examining a Sefer Torah on top of a mound of Torah scrolls:
