Chisdai Ben-porat, who molested at least one child at Camp Dora Golding in Pennsylvania last summer, is being sentenced today.

At the sentencing, the victim and his parents will, I’ve been told, not be allowed to speak – an oddity that does not bode well for those hoping Ben-porat gets a significant sentence.

Ben-porat was only charged with molesting one child, even though there is clear video proof he also molested at least one more boy.

Other children who had Ben-porat as their counselor were allegedly not questioned by police or the DA, either to gain evidence for the two known cases or to see if other boys were molested by Ben-porat, as well.

State Police, however, allegedly claim they still investigating whether other boys in the camp were molested.

Ben-porat is likely to get a probationary sentence, meaning he will be able to return to his family’s home in Canada immediately.

If police do finally get around to questioning these kids more than seven months after the incidents we know about took place, and if police gather enough evidence to indict Ben-porat for those additional crimes, will Canada return him to the US to stand trial?

That question is being asked by some who want Ben-porat’s sentencing delayed until the Pennsylvania State Police finish their belated and arguably incompetent investigation.

That, however, is unlikely to happen.

Unfortunately pedophiles see summer camps as a Disneyland paradise where they can live out their sick fantasies with a choice of hundreds of defenseless young victims while their parents are not around. As this site has amply demonstrated, the fact that the administration and staff claim to be “orthodox Jews” offers no protection whatsoever – in fact the risk may be even higher.

At the Jewish (but not religious) summer camp I went to, I recall the male “counselors” constantly hitting on the 13 and 14 year old female campers. Many parents are extraordinarily naïve about what sometimes goes on in these places.

Summer camps are fertile ground for child molesters... whether a day camp or sleep away they seem attract people who prey on kids. Why he would only get probation for molesting a child is a real question. Did someone get to the judge?

Unless he happens to have American citizenship, the Feds will have him deported upon conviction whether he wants to go home or not.

If Ben Porat is smart he will pull a Garth Drabinsky. Drabinsky is an infamous figure from Broadway productions who hid out in Canada from New York authorities. Because both countries were prosecuting him, the slap on the wrist Canadian conviction means he can no longer be extradited due to double jeopardy. Ben Porat could engineer Canadian charges of having abused a child even in another country. He would probably not face jail time due to a combination of factors and yet the conviction would void any chance of extradition.

The only chance to keep him in PA is to keep filing emergency appeals to higher courts which could last months.

Great question, here are some more:

Say your kid wants to go to camp and this camp is loved by many kids in your neighborhood. You, as a 'normal' parent ask:

Is any camp immune from this? (Answer: NO)
Did the camp administration do their best last summer? (Answer: NO)
Did other adults/parents do the right thing in a very short time frame despite the camp's reaction? (Answer: yes and possibly or probably because they are not Hareidi)

Would any other camp react better in a similar situation? (Answer: who knows???)

Is there a chance that DG's staff would react better/more appropriately in the future if something did happen? (Answer: not likely but MAYBE because they now know for sure that someone else will if they won't.)

Still is it worth the risk? The question then becomes, what are the other choices?
Are there any other all boys' camps that are not at least Hareidi lite (Dora Goldings' staff is but not its campers).

Would a camp that is more Hareidi react better while being no less at risk...? Could parents at a more Hareidi camp be counted on to do the right thing if the camp doesn't? (Answer: probably no to both.)

Of course there is always the option of a co-ed camp which, anyone who has ever been to (or as other comments have noted) is no better a choice if this is the kind of thing you are trying to avoid as a 'normal' parent. May even be worse since a certain amount of "hitting on" is to be expected in the daily (and nightly) routine.

No easy answers unless as a parent you decide against sleep away camp altogether which would be a difficult sell to kids. And are day camps or any other activities involving lots of children really any safer?

If you have any other ideas (please include names of camps etc.), definitely put them out there!

Where is the "clear" video proof?
Why would he not be prosecuted for another offense is there was "clear" proof?

The answer is: Scott posted a video a few months ago which was "clear as mud".
I believe this fellow will get a minor slap on the wrist, I, do not know the facts, have no idea id there was any molestation but apparently the case is quite weak, caught up in the "everyone- is- a- molester-and-their brother-too" frenzy that brings Scott many blog hits(and earns him advertisement cash).
Do I know what actually took place? No.Neither does Scott.I highly doubt this is a case of a dangerous pedophile.
Let the authorities, who hopefully know the details, take action and let this be a lesson for anyone harming kids

The video excerpt shows a man who appears to be Ben-porat using a clothed boy to rub against his still clothed penis. It is shot from behind, but what is taking place is clear.

It is more than enough for an indictment.

But Ben-porat's case has been mishandled – willfully, I think – by state police and the DA from day one.

If it wouldn't have been for a couple parents and a child who stood up against Ben-porat, the camp's owner Alex Gold, the cops and the DA, Ben-porat probably never would have been prosecuted at all.

Anyone who follows these types of cases knows that DA's – think Charles Hynes, for example, or Rockland County's Thomas Zugibe, often under charge child sex abuse cases and are (or, in Hynes' case was) arguably corrupt.

The New York Times has documented this well, based on Hella Winston's reporting, my reporting and the Times own reporting, and many MYC and national media outlets followed suit.
