A cell phone was reportedly found strapped underneath murdered hasidic slumlord Menachem "Max" Stark's car. It was apparently being used as a tracking device.

In these days of pre-paid phones, not likely that they'll find an owner (unless they are VERY stupid).

This whole case is baffling. One moment it seems like a hack job, the next a professional hit. Even this.......using technology to track him, but rather crude (there are more efficient GPS devices that can be used to track vehicles) technology..................

Why would they need to call that phone?

I am not seeing professional hit here, it all looks like amateur hour. If the phone was used as a detonator then (A) I think that would have leaked out with news of the phone and (B) the hit-men would be no where near the car (the whole purpose of using a phone as a detonator is that you can be miles away).

I am also not buying the "imported" Russian hit-men theory. Why would the Russian mob have to fly anyone in, they have plenty of local talent and better than what we see going down here. Professionals would be embarrassed with how this went down (they are on surveillance, they left the phone, etc, etc). Also I find it hard to believe that in that neighborhood strangers could go unchallenged. This all smells like a smoke screen to hide the fact that someone in the community is involved.

Detonator makes some sense, but hard to believe that it wouldn't have been reported or (if they'd gone to the trouble to plant one) why they wouldn't use it over a hand to hand, knock down fight..

i don't think its related to bomb. just a way to find out where he was when they wanted to find him. the battery could last a number of days if just "on" . and theres a free app that can track your phones whereabouts from any computer or smartphone. that would only use the battery for the few seconds necessary to find the current location if thats all you wanted to do.

I have never defended Menachem Stark. Au contraire, I believe that he was a crook. Nevertheless, the fact that it is party-time at FM and the vile headlines again and again says a whole lot about you rather than about Mr. stark.
MO and lower denominations have their fair share of crooks. Had it played out that the 'slumlord' had been a reform or conservative person, sone decency would have been portrayed by Shmarya regardless of the intensity of that person's criminal history.

The cell phone is more likely for tracking than for detonating a bomb (in which case you'd need a bomb and the knowhow for turning a cellphone into a detonator).

This leads me to a few hunches:
1. Stark (who had no criminal record, but seemed to be mixed up in things that may not have had a "hisachdus" hechsher) was suspected of being an informer. The people he had information on wanted to track him down and see where he goes and who he sees.
2. Stark (rumored to have had an affair) was being tracked by his wife's family or the family of the woman he was seeing (if such an affair was happening or suspected).

Nevertheless, I want to emphasize that regardless of how Stark did business or what he did he did not deserve to die "like a dog". His family did not deserve to lose him. When we speculate about this (admittedly fascinating) mystery and point out the hypocrisy of Stark's community in their reactions, let's not get carried away to the point where we imply that Stark deserved to be killed.

This find lends some credence to the theory of imported killers from eastern Europe, where they would rather jury-rig a stolen cell phone as a crude trackng device than fork over $200 for a real GPS device that would last up to 30 days. (I googled GPS tracking device battery life.)

How could it have been a cell-phone detonator. Even frum gangsters would have enough brains (if not education) to realize that it would need to be attached to a bomb before being installed....
