Two children from the haredi Lev Tahor cult who were removed from their home by Chatham-Kent (Ontario, Canada) Children’s Services Thursday night are now being returned to their parents, in part because local police in the largely rural area say they found no criminal wrongdoing, the Blackburn News reported.
The brother and sister were removed from their home by a Chatham-Kent Children’s Services worker after the worker saw what seemed to be evidence of child abuse.
“They observed some marks on the child’s face. They commenced their investigation, they sought the assistance of the police, the police ultimately determined there was no criminal activity, but based on the society’s determination they apprehended the children,” Lev Tahor’s attorney, Chris Knowles, reportedly said.
The presiding judge has now ruled that there was insufficient evidence of abuse and ordered the return of the children to their family.
However, a care and custody court hearing for the case is scheduled for January 31.
14 other Lev Tahor children were ordered removed from their homes by a Quebec judge last month citing abuse and neglect, but Lev Tahor had already fled the provence for Ontario, and Ontario law enforcement and Children’s Services refused to follow the Quebec judge’s order.
The issue is less one of getting the children out of there than of getting their parents to treat them properly. Perhaps this will serve as a warning shot. [rose colored glasses off]
