Banned In Beirut, Yours Free – If You Win
Lebanon’s Interior Ministry banned the award-winning film The Attack last spring when it found out part of it was filmed in Israel using Israeli actors.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Culture also refused to submit the film to the Oscars because of its Israel connection.
Now The Attack is out on DVD and you have a chance to win a free copy of it.
I’ll tell you how at the bottom of this post.
The Attack was made by Lebanese director Ziad Doueiri.
Doueiri – who previously worked as a camera assistant for writer-director Quentin Tarantino on several films, including his seminal film Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.
“I have no regret and no apologies whatsoever,” Doueiri said when his film was banned in his home country.
The Attack won three awards at the COLCOA French film festival in Hollywood.
It tells the story of an Israeli-Arab surgeon who is assimilated into life in Tel Aviv. After a suicide bombing, he discovers that his wife was the bomber. Shocked, Jaafari goes to the Palestinian city of Nablus to find out who and what caused his wife to do it.
Since the film was banned for anti-Israel reasons, the contest to win the DVD should reflect that somehow.
So lets do this.
In the comments section below, name your favorite banned film (NO porn) and/or your favorite actor or actress who a) isn’t Jewish but who is often mistaken for a Jew or b) is Jewish but no one knew it for years.
If you have registered with a fake email address (a big no-no) or no email address you won’t be able to win unless you a) reregister or b) send us an email explaining your evil actions. (If you choose b, an overweight blogger who may or may not be wearing only his underwear and a cowboy hat in his mother’s basement will determine if your explanation is good enough.)
We’ll randomly pick what we think is the best answer based on our personal whims and get the DVD out to you as fast as possible – maybe even in time for Hanukkah.
Hurry up boys and girls – the contest ends Wednesday at 9:00 am EDT.
Madelaine Albright. She's an actress since she did a cameo on Gilmore Girls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvoEpp41gQs
She didn't even know she was Jewish until she was in her sixties

Jenin, Jenin. According to Wikipedia:
2002: Jenin, Jenin was banned by the Israeli Film Ratings Board on the premise that it was libelous and might offend the public. The Supreme Court of Israel later overturned the decision.

Ok here goes. I cannot think of any banned films. However regarding actors with mistaken Jewish identities Alan Alda definitely takes the cake. He is not Jewish and his origional name was Aldafonzo. My email is bartleykulp@gmail.com Please let me know if you need more info.

For favorite banned film I was going to use the title of another of todays headlines, "Metzger in Chains" , but I see porn isn't included so instead I'll go with "Birth Control" , which was banned because family planning was deemed indecent and immoral in 1917 . No doubt it was the faithful and their influence who were behind its banning.
i was surprised to learn that Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame is Jewish, though Harry was not. I hope the judges are equally surprised :)

Most often mistaken for a Jew (back in my generation): Paul Newman
Long believed to be Jewish by rumor and or urban legend: Robert DeNiro (he's Italian, but his father's mother and mother's parents are all Irish)
Notable, but not widely knon-as Jews: Jennifer Connelly, Patricia Arquette, Maggie & Jake Gyllenhaal, Neve Campbell, Kate Hudson, Harvey Keitel
Best kept secret that he's Jewish: Woody Allen
But none defeat in the category of "Jewish but no one knew it for years": Charlie Sheen (and Emilio Estevez) - he even forgot he was Jewish *while being accused if antisemitism *.

Yoni, Albright knew, she just denied knowing because being Jewish wasn't gonna be any good for her career. But the public indeed did not know until the tabloid exposé.
Lisa Bonet and Winona Ryder should not be considered valid submissions, as it was widely known they were Jewish from as early as anyone knew their names.

Well, there is Harry Connick, jr., who doesn't seem to relate to the fact that he is Jewish himself. His mother was born Anita Levy and was definitely Jewish. Harry identifies with his Irish Catholic father and practices Catholicism (feh). Other entertainers whose Jewishness was news to me: Rashida Jones (I didn't know her mother Peggy Lipton is Jewish), Kyra Sedgwick, Scarlett Johanson, Shia Labeouf (the Shia should have been a giveaway), Paula Abdul (people think she is an Arab, but she isn't--I have heard her say Baruch HaShem on tv).
OTOH I think some people think Lea Michele is Jewish but she isn't. Supposedly her character Rachel Berry is Jewish, but she can't be because her character's mother isn't Jewish and she has two Jewish fathers. On the same show (Glee) the brothers Noah and Jake Puckerman are supposedly Jewish, but they have two different mothers, neither Jewish; only their father is Jewish. Ryan Murphy (who runs that show) should stick to things he knows something about.

Well, I'm not a big movie maven. But one of my wife's favorite actors is Cary Grant. She claims he's Jewish, but I'm not so sure.

I would say the brilliant comedian, Bill Maher. His mother is Jewish. Oh, and he's "banned" from millions of peoples households across the country.

Actually, let's choose Harrison 'Herschel' Ford instead. I watched most of his movies, and my wife even worked at the hospital where he was born. http://www.jewornotjew.com/profile.jsp?ID=73

1. The Battle of Algiers (which was banned in France for its depiction of the Algerian insurgency and of the French paratroopers)
2. Sammy Davis Jr. (a singer as well as an actor) who wasn't Jewish for years until he converted later in life.

"Song of the South" was unavailable in the US in 1996 on its 50th anniversary. It was considered to racist, so it was not available in any medium. One could, however, get in it Japan on videodisc at that time. I do not believe it used the word "shvartzeh," known to an alleged overweight blogger who may or may not be wearing only his underwear and a cowboy hat in his mother’s basement to mean "nigger." Still, it was probably racist.
My favorite actor or actress who a) isn’t Jewish but who is often mistaken for a Jew or b) is Jewish but no one knew it for years would have to be BOB DYLAN,(Robert A. Zimmerman) ٍ who, it could be argued in a great debate, has been at various times both A) and B).
