Since Sefardi haredi leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef passed away last week, many in the Israeli media have been reportedly questioned why Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not eulogize Yosef during the funeral, even though Netanyahu and other government officials, including President Shimon Peres, attended.
Yosef, who was 93-years-old, was a former Sefardi chief rabbi of Israel and the founder of the Sefardi haredi Shas political party.
Israel’s internal security agency commonly known as the Shin Bet had reportedly refused to allow the senior government officials to join the massive funeral procession due to security concerns, but Netanyahu’s eulogy was expected to be delivered at the Shamgar nursing home.
But despite a public announcement saying that Netanyahu would deliver his eulogy there, Netanyahu never did.
According to Yeshiva World, the Israeli haredi news website Kikar HaShabbat reported Saturday night that Netanyahu was prevented from eulogizing Yosef by the chevra kadisha, the state-funded haredi-controlled burial society.
The rabbis of the chevra kadisha reportedly cited Netanyahu’s lack of religious observance for their decision.
“We will not permit a person who is violates Shabbat [law] and [who] eats all types of [non-kosher] forbidden foods to give eulogize a gadol hador [leading rabbi of a generation],” they reportedly said.
Netanyahu was relegated to making a brief statement to the press on Yosef as he was leaving the funeral home.
“We have a great deal of respect for the prime minister but having one who is not Sabbath observant eulogizing a gadol hador – there is a limit,” a member of Rabbi Yosef’s family told Kikar HaShabbat in support of banning Netanyahu’s eulogy from the official funeral.
