Israel’s Minister of Education Rabbi Shai Piron told haredi yeshivas that the ministry he controls will cancel all funding for haredi yeshivas that continue to harass students based on their votes in Israel’s municipal elections, Arutz 7 reported.
Piron’s new official directive was issued in response to mainstream haredi rabbinic leaders who decided yesterday to expel any student who voted for the haredi rebel faction rather than the mainstream faction’s endorsed candidates unless those students sign a form that mandates them to always vote for endorsed mainstream candidates and that apologizes to mainstream rabbinic leadership for rebelling against them.
“We have received complaints that certain institutions have expelled students following the municipal elections who voted, or intended to vote, for parties that were deemed not within the 'spirit' of the institution's administration [or policies].
"Institutions which have been found to have taken coercive measures against those students to vote for one party, or to refrain from voting for a certain party, or who have hurt or discriminated against students to cause them to vote according to the institutions own [political] convictions, will have measures enacted against them, including possible financial repercussions.…
“We will not allow activists to make the Ministry of Education into their personal political arena [or to] coerce students, whether in [elementary and high] schools or in yeshivot. Hareidi communities, like all communities in Israel, deserve an educational system which is professional and non-partisan. Anyone who refuses to allow this will not be subsidized [by the government],” Piron’s letter to haredi yeshiva administrators reportedly reads.
Good idea.
Better idea: de-fund all yeshivas since they foment hatred and divisiveness in the nation, and they don't need any worldly help in any case.
Just like the Rabbi(d)s explain that God will protect the country, God will help you take care of the 15 kids you birth, God will also fund the Yeshiva.

Finally, now go one step further, de-fund every yeshiva whose students refuse army service.

This doesn't read like a threat - it rather appears to be a promise.
Good.

About time though the first such yeshiva has yet to be defunded so I'll hold off on the plaudits till one is.

Just defund almost all of them. Only a handful are needed to groom spiritual/community leaders. A country doesn't need more yeshivot than universities

He's not going to do a thing. It's all threats. What I have learned this year is that the state of Israel will do nothing to protect people from Haredim. It's all Israeli bluster. Bunch of loud mouths. In the end, politics wins and the Haredim are organized. So they win wherever they are.
