Ami Magazine Glorifies Haredi Violence Only Days After Arrests Of Haredi Kidnap-Torture-Extortion Gang

Ami Living published a story in Wednesday's edition – only days after the arrest of 10 haredi kidnap-torture-extortion gang members, including several haredi rabbis – about a hasidic innkeeper who fell behind on his rent. The non-Jewish landlord, the poritz, was about to evict him. So the hasid went to his rebbe for help and the rebbe sent him to search out a mysterious 'tzaddik' (righteous man) who would save him. The hasid eventually finds the tzaddik and the tzaddik helps him – by savagely beating the poritz.

These sort of "miracle" stories are quite common in Chassidic literature and found frequently in Chabad publications.

It's amazing that the landlord didn't call in the Cossacks to deal with the situation.

When I was a child a read the story about a simple Jew called Moishke from the village of Papurshka in Belorussia who had a dream that there is a treasure under a bridge in Prague.

He saves all his money and goes the long trip to Prague, when gets to the bridge in Prague he is stopped by a soldier who asks him what he is doing here.

Moishke tells him his story and the soldier says: “You stupid Jew, I have a dream about a Jew in Papurshka in Belorussia who has a treasure in his house under his oven, do you think I will go there?, go back to where you come from or I will kill you”.

Moishke goes back home and finds the treasure .

I liked the story very much, but when I got older and read better stories, I found to my surprise that the same story appears in the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I have no doubt that he stole the story from the children section of L’mishpacha, a shameful goy…

entry in the diary of a Volhynian country squire, from the year 1774 which shows where the Poritz in the Ami story went wrong by mercifully only threatening the Jewish innkeeper with eviction:

The latter I took to the manor, and I had him instructed in the [Catholic] catechism and the prayers."

The boy in question was forced to make the sign of the cross and to eat pork. Only the arrival of Jews from Berdychev, who remitted the debt of the arendar, saved the father from imprisonment and the son from enforced conversion.

After the innkeeper screwed over his landlord by stiffing him for the unpaid rent, what happened to his future rent for the remainder of his tenancy? Did he start paying? Or did he continue his deadbeat status while committing extortion?

The update is that the decendants of the poritz watched the decendants of the innkeeper, the holy rabbi and the thousands of Jews of Dobina taken into the nearby woods to be murdered by invading Germans. Since these dead Jews had no need for their houses, their homes and belongings were shared out between their non-Jewish neighbors.

As a lawyer, I've had to point out many times that a commercial lease, such as one for an inn, is based on the proposition that the tenant will be using the property to make money and that rent is a legitimate cost of doing business. (That's why it's deductible, AFAIK.)

Even under the craziest proposals for "commercial rent control" here in New York City, no one has yet suggested that business tenants are entitled to free rent.

If I have a chance, I'm going to see if I can locate a printed copy of the magazine. Perhaps there was a second page that explained this moral bankruptcy.
