Haredi journalist Yaakov Eichler didn’t like it when Egged’s spokesperson, Ron Ratner, told listeners during a Galei Yisrael Radio interview that Egged had to launch a special advertising campaign for the haredi community to explain to haredim that riding Egged buses without paying the fare is stealing because so many haredim were stealing rides.

Ratner said that over the past year and half there has been a marked increase in the number of riders who do not pay, and that an alarming number of these stolen rides take place on bus lines that service haredi communities. Ratner said that “a substantial number” of haredim get on Egged buses but do not pay for their rides. In one example Ratner cited, 27 of 51 riders on a predominantly haredi bus did not pay the fare.

Eichler claims that Ratner’s statements are racist incitement against haredim, and filed a criminal complaint with police, according to Yeshiva World.

The US can deal with a couple hundred thousand of these characters making a mess out of selected corners of NY state; they're still down in the noise level nationally. Not so in Israel. Their aggressiveness mounts daily. Nothing good will come of it when push comes to shove there.

What one sees in Israel is a culture of entitlement. The country kowtowed to the Haredim in every way shape and form. Welfare, subsidies, medical aid and national service deferrments were the way of the world. Wearing a black hat and black suit was and to an extent still is an invitation to a free flow of funds without actually contributing to society. I believe that is going to come to an end.

I believe that the actions of these people speak louder than words. The Israeli government will have their hands forced by the actions of the religious caste. There will be draconian measures adopted otherwise the country will fail and be overrun by the surrounding enemies. The Haredim say that their "Torah Learning" keeps this from happening, but it is undeniable, that at the current rate of growth, their population will become unsustainable. The country is already in financial straits. Free bus rides are an indicator of the complete rejection of civil authority.

What needs to happen is a severe about-face in policy. No welfare, no stipends. Everyone serves in the army. Everyone works. You refuse the army, go to jail, at hard labor. Your rosh yeshiva says to refuse the army. The Yeshiva is demolished. The rosh yeshiva goes to prison at hard labor. You steal a bus ride, you go to jail. The Haredim still do not appreciate the sea change. I propose that if you do not work and pay tax into your country, then you lose the right to vote.
