Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award-winning singer, actress and producer Barbra Streisand, in Israel to perform, to attend President Shimon Peres’ 90th birthday party, and to receive an honorary doctorate from Hebrew University, reportedly attacked haredi abuse of women that takes place in public spaces like public buses and the Kotel (Western Wall).

Speaking at Hebrew University today as she received her doctorate, Streisand said she is distressed to read about women "being forced to sit at the back of the bus" and women being assaulted while praying at the Kotel, the AP reported.

She reportedly urged Israel to ensure equal rights for women while praising Hebrew University for issuing what the AP termed its “largest-ever number of doctorates to women this year.”

Voice, has it ever occurred to you that those of us who love our fellow Jews are (as I am) heartbroken by seeing our brother and sisters (and their children) wallowing in ignorance and poverty?

Well, I don't know how to break this to you, but it DOES break our hearts. I don't see the Jews in that lifestyle pursue education (in the United States) beyond the bare minimum to graduate High School, and when you couple that with their numerous children, you are asking for crushing poverty. It breaks my heart to see my fellow Jews living like that. It also breaks my heart to think that they KNOWINGLY and VOLUNTARILY made that choice.

I don't see the Jews in that lifestyle (in the United States) poesess (or seek to poesess) ANY knowledge about books, movies, music, art or national or international affairs (except what's going on in/around Israel) and that breaks my heart as well. Our people have ALWAYS had a thirst for knowledge and education. I think we are called "The People of The Book" for a reason.

It's not about being a self-hating Jew, Voice. It's about wanting your fellow Jews to be educated and productive citizens in this day and age in the country in which they (and we) reside.

@ Robert If you read Chaim Levin's article on his secular education (or lack thereof) which appeared on this web site in April 2012, you will realize that the secular education situation for Hasidic Jews is much worse than what you describe.

According to a recently released report on Jewish poverty in the New York area, nearly 50% of Jewish children in the region now live in poor or near poor conditions. In a couple of generations, I predict that most Jews in the New York area will be poorly educated and on the government dole.

RE: hatred anger disgust at the super Charedim (I prefer that to frum, some of my best friends......) I believe that the vast majority of posters here, are here, because they care, that this human garbage are Jews. If they were not so disgusted, repulsed, and did not wish that these things not be the reality, IMHO they would not be reading and posting every day. Would they waste their time on an Islamaphobe site? I doubt it.. Vile behavior in Israel, e.g. is painful, because these are, supposedly our brethren. @Hal- I think you are quite right. Everything that I have read and heard about the haredi (both Israel and here in the US- and I see this in my own cousins who adopted that lifestyle) shows they have nothing but contempt and (in many cases) hate for those who are different than they are.

And you know what I just remembered? I do Immigration Law, with my emphasis in Deportation Defense. A few years ago, I saved a Palestinian from deportation. (He was/is married to a US Citizen, and that's how I was able to keep him here)...

....and a couple of years after I closed the case, he showed back up in my office to inquire about becoming a citizen, but..he was going to be moving to another state, and maybe he should hire a lawyer there, yadda, yadda yadda....

...and he said to me that one of the reasons he would never show his children life in the Gaza Strip was because "I don't want anyone teaching them to hate".

The frumma could learn much from him.

Voice, I'll plead guilty to naivete, but not to stupidity. And I can't address the motivations of others, but I can certainly address MY motivations, and at the risk of repeating myself, I love my fellow Jews, and I am heartbroken to see them wallowing in self-chosen poverty and ignorance.

And frankly, I don't see where ELSE that lifestyle leads it's followers.

And I have said this before about this website- if there wasn't so much dysfunction (not to mention poverty, ignorance, criminality, etc) in the haredi community, where would Sharmya get his website topics? Out of thin air?

Now, if YOU love your fellow haredim, maybe YOU can do something positive for them.

Help them see that there's nothing particularly holy about poverty and ignorance. Also help them see that there is nothing particularly holy about refusing to engage with, and participate in, the modern world. You might do some good.
