Hosam Amara, one of two former Agriprocessors supervisors who fled to Israel as indictments against them were being drafted by the US Attorney has finally been extradited to the US after years of delay, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported.
Amara is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids today.
Amara was indicted on charges one count of conspiracy to harbor undocumented aliens for profit, 24 counts of harboring and aiding the harboring of undocumented aliens for profit, one count of conspiracy to commit document fraud and one count of aiding document fraud.
Zeev Levi, the other Agriprocessors manager who fled the country, allegedly to Israel, remains at large.
Amara also allegedly ran a scheme to buy broken down used vehicles from a Cedar Rapids dealership and sell them to undocumented workers as a precondition for those workers getting jobs at Agriprocessors. The cars and trucks were sold at highly inflated prices.
Amara faces as much as 10 years in prison on each of the conspiracy to harbor and harboring counts, as much as 5 years on the conspiracy to commit document fraud count, and as much as 10 years on the document fraud charge.
He and Armando Ramiro Garcia-Arenales will be singing like canaries to the Feds. And then more Rubashkins going to prison? We can only hope.

I didn't get the invitation to the fundraiser for their defense funds.
must be that Rubashkin's lost appellate and habeas causes get all the money, and the underlings get thrown under the bus.

Since the Federal Goverment seems unibterested in pursuing the alkeged extorsion charges, will the State of Iowa be interested and able to investigate, indict and prosecute?

Luis –
Hared to say. Im not sure the car extortion by itself could be a federal charge. But if the feds link it to the immigration conspiracy, then it could be prosecuted. At any rate, these are only the initial charges.
As for the State of Iowa, they get a crack at Amara after the feds are done with him. I dont know if theyll take it or, for that matter, if they still can.

@Luis, @Shmarya,
Generally speaking, after the Feds get their "pound of flesh", so to speak, states usually DO NOT prosecute....but that's case-by-case specific, and what drives that is ---->
1. How much federal time the guy got
2. How time-consuming it will be to prosecute on state charges
3. Other factors- sometimes political factors.
Best example I can give is Terry Nichols...the co-conspirator on the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The Feds went after him and got life without parole.
The State of OK prosecuted, b/c they have the death penalty- but a number of folks, said "why bother- he's never getting out."
Well, his prosecution cost around/about 5 million...for the same sentence. I think there was grumbling that the prosecutor was going to try to ride that conviction to higher political office (DA or AG is a great stepping-stone to Mayor, Governor, and/or beyond)and it all came to naught.
Sooooo...again, it's always case-specific.
But if he needs a lawyer, I'm available, and I'd love to visit Iowa! LOL LOL LOL

From the AP:
His hands and feet shackled, Hasam Amara walked slowly into the federal courtroom in Cedar Rapids on Friday.
Amara pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with 25 counts related to harboring people in the U.S. illegally and two counts related to document fraud.

From thegazette.com:
"Amara, appearing in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, pleaded not guilty Friday to one count of conspiracy to harbor undocumented workers for profit, 24 counts of harboring and aiding and abetting the harboring of undocumented workers for profit, one count of conspiracy to commit document fraud and one count of aiding and abetting document fraud.
U.S. Magistrate Jon Scoles appointed Steven Drahozal, a Dubuque attorney, as counsel to Amara.
U.S. Assistant Attorney Peter Deegan asked the court to detain Amara pending trial based on the fact that he had been a fugitive since being indicted in 2008. Deegan also asked the court to allow the U.S. Marshal’s Office to transfer two passports Amara had in his possession to the probation office."
