"FYI grand rabbi is an inaccurate translation of the French le Grand Rabbin."

You are correct. The word 'grand' is a false cognate in French that English speakers who are new to the language invariably translate as 'grand' in English. Most often the word simply means 'big' or 'large' in English.

"As he said: Just Des[s]erts..."

Just deserts is correct. No need for the second 's'.

oh, you know what I mean

parisjew, he's a stinkin' liar and thief.

GimpeltheGimp, his last name is Rosenberg.

So you don't think knowing about other Jewish communities, especially the third largest in the world (outside Israel and the US) is important?

HaSoferet, who said that?

Yosef ben Matitya

unfortunately, it is possible, as mentioned by Yonasan earlier, that 'next one could be a chabadskie who can say Yechi Adonenu in 70 languages, but speaks no French!'.

Gimpel the Gimp

Unlike Shmarya Routers does not think he is Haredi and they refer to him as Modern Orthodox

It is difficult to me to defend Haredim but that is just too funny

Yes of course, we can and will move on.

However, for those of us that are seeing this as the header on most of the national newspapers, it's painful. Ben, you may never have heard about him but he happens to be the face of French jewry. Whether I agree or disagree with the man's policies. As HaSoferet points out, the third largest Jewish community in the world...

Umbrella group as a description of the Consistoire isn't accurate either. But Americans are unaccustomed to the idea of a chief rabbinate and the various offices and functions it encompasses.

The Consistoire does indeed have a fascinating history, as does the French Jewish community.

What is referred to as an "umbrella group of French Jewry" is know in French as the Consistoire Central Isrealite de France. I won't delve into the fascinating history of the institution but will note that it was actually created by Napoleon the 1st to administer French Jews. I certainly wish their umbrella was a little bigger since they don't recognize liberal, conservative, mazorti, haredi or basically anything that is not them. That being said they do believe that Jews should fit in with the modern world and that secular study is the foundation of that. So I guess I shouldn't complain. I'm ashamed that Bernheim did what he did and thought he could get away with it. Lastly, to the best of my understanding, he never admitted that he lied about his academic credentials. He simply said that he never corrected others who got his credentials wrong....

So you don't think knowing about other Jewish communities, especially the third largest in the world (outside Israel and the US) is important?

FYI grand rabbi is an inaccurate translation of the French le Grand Rabbin. It simply means chief Rabbi.
