The Harlequin -- if you are referring to the character that I have in mind -- has historical antecedents to the commedia dell'arte stock comic character of the Italian High Renaissance. It has no connection to black American performers like Eddie Murphy.

His face looks more orange, like he slathered on an inch of tanning lotion. His face is like a basketball or his shirt. Still in poor taste. Doesn't know when to stop shoving his foot down his throat either. The Daily Show clip was a riot.
