Eliyahu Zarifa, a 46-year-old Monsey haredi resident of Monsey, New York dubbed a “mystery man” by local press, was sentenced yesterday to 14 years in state prison for sexually abusing a girl for six years, beginning when she was 10-years-old, the Journal News reported.
Zarifa reportedly fled to Israel when the victim, who is now 17-years-old, was about to report Zarifa to police. However, he returned to the United States not long after and was arrested.
In August, Zarifa pleaded guilty to first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, a Class B felony that carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison.
“The courage and poise displayed by the victim when she first came forward and during sentencing was undeniable. The lengthy sentence meted out by the court is more than warranted,” Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe told the Journal News.
Zarifa will have to serve 10 years’ probation when he is released from prison and will also have to register as a sex offender with New York State.
In a related case, Zarifa was charged in June with third-degree grand larceny, which is a Class D felony. He allegedly stole $4,000 in Medicaid benefits between March 2011 and February 2012 and could be sentenced to up to seven years in state prison if convicted.
That case has not yet been adjudicated.

I am in no way condoning immoral or illegal actions. But I would like to point out that the society as a whole has a big problem with their sexual drive. There was an article http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/worried-about-sextortion-fbi-shares-cautionary-tale-1B8287395?ocid=msnhp&pos=5 that shows us what the society as a whole is doing. It is quite disturbing that this is going on in our country. Again I am not excusing anyone's behavior I am merely pointing out that the entire country (and maybe the entire world) needs some major help in controlling their sex drive.

While child abuse is certainly not exclusive to our religion, I'm particularly offended by the lack of condemnation and even support for these animals.
As a religion that prides itself on a higher degree of morality and ethics, I consider the reaction - or lack of reaction - simply appalling.
Furthermore, the victims are subjected to further abuse when they are persecuted by the community after they report their abuse. I don't care how common this has become in general society, there is no excuse for how our religion has responded.

As a follow up to my previous comment - because I'm really ticked off - when you start reading about this in Hamodia, Yated, etc, etc., - in addition to here then I might cut our religious leaders and institutions some slack.

Who do you suggest help the world with their sex drive problems? people who have more children than they can support? people who protect child molesters? People who are sexually aroused by the shape of their pastries? Animals are castrated because they cannot control themselves...far more effective than blacking out a little skin.
