Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the 92-year-old founder and spiritual leader of the Sefardi haredi Shas political party, was released from hospital today, Ha’aretz reported. He was rushed to hospital Saturday morning after collapsing in his synagogue. His symptoms – including numbness of a hand that had begun hours earlier – are consistent with a minor stroke.
Hadassah University Hospital treated Yosef for those symptoms overnight and then released him this morning, ordering that he rest at home. Before being released, Yosef reportedly stepped out of his hospital room and greeted well-wishers.
Yosef initially refused to go to the hospital because he did not want to travel on Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath. However, a doctor praying in Yosef’s synagogue urged that Yosef be taken to a hospital by ambulance as quickly as possible, arguing that Yosef appeared to be having a stroke.
Jewish law mandates that the Jewish Sabbath be violated in cases where there is possible danger to life.
B"H, may e continue to have a refuah shelema.

Why did he commit such a blatant public violation of Halacha by refusing to attend hospital because it was Shabbat? Halacha requires one to attend hospital with a condition (or even a suspected condition) such as his on Shabbat, Yom Tovim and at any other time. Will this cause some of his followers to die because they follow his improper example of this Halachic violation?
