Drafting haredim may “spark” a civil war, Sefardi haredi Shas Party co-chairman Aryah Deri said yesterday.

"I am worried about what will happen here if a law defining the status of yeshiva students isn't legislated, and if the IDF is forced to go out into the streets and, though it does not want to, forcibly enlist yeshiva men. It could, God forbid, spark a civil war," Deri reportedly told the Shas publication Yom Leyom.

Meanwhile, internal cracks have developed in Shas over Deri’s ethnic- and racial-based campaigning and over the party’s decision to leave all the campaigning for the January 22 elections solely to Deri and party co-chairman Ariel Atias.

"Deri and Atias have assumed the campaign responsibilities and they decided on a very aggressive line revolving around discrimination and ethnicity, and this campaign is eliciting a lot of anger against us," a Shas MK told Israel Hayom.

A party source added that, "many of the MKs don't agree with this decision, but the jobs have been allocated and Deri is running the show…He [Deri] decided that they want to talk only about the issues that they think are important to bring up, like the ethnic discrimination. They are making a lot of mistakes, and it is a shame. It is true that there is in fact ethnic discrimination, and it is true that the social gaps need to be addressed, but to turn this into the party's central issue is too much.”

Polls show Shas possibly losing seats in the upcoming election.

If you own long term Israeli bonds, don't be surprised if the government defaults on them before they mature. Do you think the Haredi care about such matters?

Planning to make aliyah? Make sure your US (or other foreign) passport is up to date. You never know when you have to make a quick exit. Rent, don't buy. Real estate resale values aren't very good in a civil war zone.

It is actually quite simple.

The IDF does not need to send squads to round up draftee's. If they do not answer their draft notice their funding from the State gets cut off. No subsidies, no tuition money.

Well, AK, you have a choice: life imprisonment - or death by firing squad. Which would you prefer?

As I have said many times, the Charedim are not suitable to be drafted into the military. They are too poorly educated, too unfit physically and mentally and have no initiative and motivation or ability to think independently as they are used to asking their Rebbe even the most mundane of questions before acting. (Think of what would happen if they got separated from their commander.)

Plus it is too difficult to accommodate Charedim (e.g. no medical checks, single gender units, food that goes beyond Halachic requirements for kashrut, excessive amounts of the work day spent "learning" and "davening" and being a general administrative burden).

They MUST however be DRAFTED into genuine useful jobs which are harder, more unpleasant and of much longer duration than military service would be. They could be given discounts in the service duration if they agreed to take vocational educational courses.

As for your question about "what is life improsinment mean here" (whatever that extraordinarily peculiar statement might mean) do you not think that your remarks might have been more profitably addressed to alter kocker, who raised the matter in the first place?

If he is married, how does one separate the payment to the wife and children to the portion that is his. You cannot penalize the children because the father doesn't want to serve.
