Detectives from the Israel Police Jerusalem District's Minority Division arrested six Arab youths, several of them minors, for allegedly attacking two haredi youths outside the Damascus Gate with snowballs more than a week ago, Ynet reports.
They will be arraigned later today.
Three other suspects were arrested Thursday and have been remanded for what Ynet reports are an additional four days.
The suspects were videoed taunting two haredi yeshiva students. One Arab used his hand to knock the hat of one of the students off his head, and many of the youths threw snowballs from close range at the haredim.
The video of the attack went viral, and many Jews – especially right-of-center Jews – saw echoes of the Holocaust in the attack on the defenseless haredim.
No one was injured in the attack.
The attack followed a massive snowball fight between haredim and Arabs 11 days ago. Police arrested three Arab youths in that snowball fight (and were allegedly charged with throwing rocks – although the bottom two videos posted below would seem to contradict this claim) but did not arrest any haredim.
No one was reported injured in that incident, either.
Update 10:17 am CST – The Jerusalem Post adds another key fact – the snowballs were not directed at Jews only. Arabs and tourists were also targeted:
…A group of approximately 100 Arabs, mostly teenagers, spent much of the morning hanging out at Damascus Gate and pelting everyone who entered or exited Damascus Gate - Jews, Arabs, and tourists alike - with dozens of snowballs, despite pleas to stop from various parties. But the innocent snowball fight got out of hand when two haredim tried to leave Damascus Gate and were accosted by approximately twenty Arabs, who threw snowballs at them from less than a meter away and tried to steal one of their hats.
A video taken of the incident went viral on Facebook with thousands of people expressing disgust. Police arrested three Arabs last weekend and six Arabs from the Old City on Sunday night, both minors and adults. The Jerusalem Magistrates Court extended the remand of three of the Arabs arrested last week for four days.
It does not appear from the video that anyone tried to steal a hat, though, as you can see:
