Holy gemach, Batman!
Gotham City has been struck by another nefarious plot, this one hatched in Borough Park and meant to deprive the city’s cash-strapped coffers of cold hard cash.
A Borough Park lumber and home center has reportedly set up a gemach, a charity fund, made up of used Muni-Meter receipts donated by customers and neighbors in a cardboard box near his checkout counter.
The scam works this way.
People who receive parking tickets near the store check the box for matching Muni-Meter receipts with the same block and time. If they find one that matches, they use it to challenge their ticket by falsely claiming that their ticket was written in error.
New receipts with time still remaining on them are also donated and used by gemach patrons.
"People come in here all the time to check it out," an employee of the Boro Park Lumber & Home Center told the Daily News.
However, a store manager claimed the gemach wasn't organized by the store or its personnel.
"Somebody outside the store did it. We are not involved in it," the manager reportedly said.
"No one can dispute the fact that our city is ticket-happy, but fraudulently helping people fight tickets when they are actually guilty is over the top,” a shocked City Councilman James Vacca, who is the chairman of the Council’s Transportation Committee, told the News.
Indeed.

What can the City do? We all look alike to them.

How foolish of the city to not include the date on the receipt. How else can one fight meter disputes?

? The city didn't think of this work-around when they implemented the Muni-meter system?

Shmarya, please do not allow frum trolls to imitate names of established contributors here on FM.
I am referring to 'Jefl' above.
The trolls, consumed by hate of those who point out their stupidity, combined with lack of imagination, sometimes try to use monikers similar to those of us who are usually of the opposition.

Apparently, Shmarya's righteous ire comes from the likely fact that he has never personally owned and paid for a car in a major metropolitan area like New York. Mommy's free car and basement parking space don't count.

That such a scheme occurs in the open without fear of rabbinic reproach, is a sad commentary on the Orthodox community. Where are the rabbis?

What is needed is to have people register to post. The login/sign in process will preclude duplicate handles.
Simple, like the inclusion of the date on the muni-meter receipt.

Oh, like all the ticketing blitzes this city provides is so kosher, there are hundreds of NY citizens who just get slapped with all kinds of fines, whether guilty or not, they don't have the time or money to fight it, they just pay it, and Bloomy just rakes in millions a day. And the Traffic Cop is pretty much aware of that fact, all they are concerned is filling in their quotes!
Ticketing have simply become part of a revenue NOT to discourage traffic violations.
Towing someone's vehicle for just 2 fines and late fees are neither nothing short of a "scam". Yes, if its the "city" committing it then its all fine, but the average hard working citizen has to be tormented by the DOT.

All their lifestyle and livelihood from Pell grants to section 8 through welfare is based on fraud.
The Haredim always find ways to defend and rationalize it. Then they wonder why they are being despised by everybody.

How are there any people to donate receipts? Do some people pay and others don't? Is it, like, poor rabbinic families who don't pay the parking meters?

I dunno, man. It's a brilliant way of fighting the system, if you ask me.

Isn't there a simpler solution if you're haredi in Brooklyn? Just go to Hynes' office and have them drop the charge.
Can anyone heading over there pick me up 4 or 5 Section 8 application forms? I need some extra cash this month.

"Where are the Rabbis?" Ha! They are praying for the gemach's prosperity and a 10% of the money each person saves on the ticket.

The city is beginning to take pictures when they give tickets......
It may not be righteous yet the extreme the city tickets people's is almost impossible to get around.
