Cease Fire Announced
A 'quiet in exchange for quiet' ceasefire between Hamas and israel is now reportedly in place. Stage 2 negotiations dealing with arms smuggling and other issues will reportedly follow sometime in the next several weeks.
I just heard Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announce the cease fire live from Cairo on MSNBC. I'll try to post more details as they come in
Bibi Netanyahu is a man who shows fealty to the defunct Lubavitcher Rebbe. No wonder he’s incompetent, delusional and corrupt. What more do you expect from a "frumma?"

Prayers for the Holy Land and Middle East in the coming hours and days. Take note all...Violence is not innate.

Yeah - they are more trustworthy. They had the election right. Fox news was off about 10 points.

Two bad options:
a) Agree to a ceasefire, or
b) A military ground operation in Gaza.
A ceasefire before Hamas has been cleaned out and purged is unfortunate. On the other hand, a military ground operation which could result in a large number of casualties is not an option anyone would wish for.

Maybe we should just be thankful and hopeful for the time being.

Apologies to the Rolling Stones:
Hang Fire
In the sweet old shtetl where I come from
Nobody ever works
Yeah nothing gets done
Well cease fire, well cease fire
You know marrying money is a full time job
I will learn in a kollel
I'm a lazy slob
Cease fire, Cease fire
Cease fire, situation dire
We've Glatt Kosher to eat
We don't wanna work
Mountain Dew to drink
We only wear white shirts
I'm on the dole
We ain't for hire
You're all going to hell
You're all going to hell, cease fire
Cease fire, cease fire, situation dire
Doo doo doo
We have ten thousand scholars, nowhere to run
Amnon's prophecies are a hundred to one
Cease fire, cease fire, situation dire

Yes, and if you had, instead of all Fox all the time, you might not have made such a fool of yourself. I am talking, of course, about the foolishness you are not man enough to acknowledge and apologize for.
Mr. Not Man Enough, you still owe Nate Silver and me apologies.

Well, the ceasefire lasted about two minutes.

The question is...for how long this one will last?

Hey MM, why don't you go back to the following thread, and see what I wrote on Nov 7 at 7:51 AM.

I was man enough to admit I was very wrong and that Silver was right. I did it right away, the next morning after the election.
Now let's see if you're man enough to admit that you were wrong about me not being man enough.

I hope what follows helps bring out what decisions need to be made:
The cease fire has ended long before Hamas rockets have been cleared out, and long before the threat along the border has been neutralized. To accomplish this will require a ground invasion. However a ground invasion without retaking sovereignty over these areas will result in the rockets being put back in place as soon as the IDF leaves.
Therefore, a ground invasion will not accomplish much unless followed up by retaking the area. I can see how tragic such a ground invasion without followup would be: loss of life yet allowing the situation to return to the current state in a short time.
I hope this clarifies what decisions need to be made.

An important addendum. This cease fire came rather early. Even if one decides that retaking Gaza will not be done, and then decides that a ground invasion should not be done since in the long run it will not alter the situation it is important to avoid showing weakness. That only encourages further aggression. Therefore it is necessary to have a show of strength to make Chamas (pun intended) think several times before they pull something like that again. The people who launch rockets into Israel need to feel some pain.
What other option? Complete pacific-ism?
Anyway, these measured and limited responses, these compromises seem to only continue and encourage the situation.
I am just surprised that retaking Gaza isn't given more consideration.

Yoel,
There was alot of pressure from the Obama Admin and the Europeans to not go in to Gaza. 70% of Israelis supported a ground invasion, so it would have only helped Bibi to go in (especially in the upcoming elections), but he couldn't stand up to the pressure from Obama.

LaC: if they don't go or won't go, they need to hit very hard so no one will think they are backing down due to weakness
