Israeli Groups Demand Answers Over Haredi Draft

Dozens of Israeli nonprofits and non-governmental organizations including Israel’s National Students’ Union, Yad LaBanim, and Hiddush, say they plan to hold Defense Minister Ehud Barak responsible for the IDF’s failure to draft haredim after the law exempting them, which was ruled unconstitutional by Israel’s High Court of Justice, expired over the summer.

Dozens of Israeli nonprofits and non-governmental organizations including Israel’s National Students’ Union, Yad LaBanim, and Hiddush, say they plan to hold Defense Minister Ehud Barak responsible for the IDF’s failure to draft haredim after the law exempting them, which was ruled unconstitutional by Israel’s High Court of Justice, expired over the summer, Ha’aretz reports.

The groups want Israel to institute a universal draft so the burden of defending the country can be shared by all parts of Israeli society.

In a letter written to Barak, the groups asserted that the IDF’s failure to draft haredim violates the law, and they laid the responsibility for that squarely on Barak’s shoulders.

"According to our sources, a plan [to draft haredim] has been drafted [by the IDF] but is not being carried out because of your decision not to advance it...By […failing to draft haredim] you are turning the IDF into a transgressor in not recruiting some 55,000 yeshiva students who are due to join the army,” the groups reportedly wrote Barak, also telling the Defense Minister that his failure to draft haredim was causing “a moral, legal and social injustice” that was also “harming Israel's security.”

The Defense Ministry reportedly responded by claiming that “the IDF will submit its recommendations regarding the haredi draft immediately after the Sukkot holiday." The ministry's response also noted that when the law governing the exemption of haredi yeshiva students from military service expired this summer, all men who met draft elegibility requirements were mandated to register.

There is no evidence, however, that the masses of haredi yeshiva students have actually complied.

Israel has no WRITTEN constitution because religious parties have blocked the process to adopt one.

But it has a set of basic laws that legally make up a constitution.
