IDF To Send 15,000 Draft Notices To Haredim
Over the next few weeks, the IDF will send draft notices to 15,000 haredim aged 17 to 19. The notices will require the haredim to report for interviews but will not result in an immediate draft – and they will not be sent to all the haredim who by law should be serving in the IDF.

Over the next few weeks, the IDF will send draft notices to 15,000 haredim aged 17 to 19. The notices will require the haredim to report for interviews but will not result in an immediate draft, Ha’aretz reports.
These haredim will follow the standard recruitment process required of all 17-year-olds and it can take up to year from reporting until enlistment or drafting takes place.
Their reporting will be gender segregated and will be handled by male IDF staff only.
The IDF has decided, at least in the short term, not to send draft notices to older Haredim, aged 19-23, who were previously granted deferments that the High Court of Justice ruled in February to be illegal.
Senior IDF officers and Defense Ministry officials presented the plan to begin the haredi draft at a meeting with Defense Minister Ehud Barak yesterday. Barak in turn will present the plan to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee today. The plan reportedly conforms to the High Court of Justice ruling, along with the IDF's manpower needs and “the principle of equality of service.”
The IDF reportedly still in the process of establishing new haredi-only battalions so haredim can remain gender segregated and largely cloistered during their army service.
