Daughter Joins Burka Cult, Haredi Parents Arrested

When Israeli haredim need a professional cultbuster, who do they turn to?
No one, it seems.
A young haredi woman left her parent’s home about one year ago and joined the burka cult, also known as the haredi Taliban women or the shawl women, cutting all ties with her hasidic parents.
Her parents called police who explained to them that there was nothing they could do – joining an even more extreme haredi sect than the one the parents belong to is not a crime.
The young woman moved in with a Taliban family, and the cult’s women eventually introduced her to a young man who is part of the cult. They got engaged and are reportedly about to marry.
The girl’s parents found out, Ynet reports, and Wednesday they went to the home where their daughter has been living for the past year and tried to get her to change her mind.
But they weren’t successful – far from it.
The girl’s father tried to force her to come with him, and an argument erupted between her family and members of the Taliban cult. An eyewitness reportedly saw the girl’s father scream as he pounded on the apartment door and tried to break in to take his daughter.
Police were called.
Instead of convincing their daughter to reconsider, the girl’s parents and a friend were arrested by police.
They were released from police custody after an Israeli court issued a restraining order against them.
missing from story is how old the girl is? But this is not a Jewish issue but a general one when ones child joins a cult

A double edge sword here - the price of freedom. Some parents are upset when their kids become more frum and some when the their kids become less frum and go off the derech. Happens all the time so as long as they are of age to make their own decision this is what freedom is all about.

One insanity that of the hareidim begets another insanity that of the burka meshugeners.

As Jeff says, the frumma have no sense of irony.

There's actually a body of case law in the United States dealing with false imprisonment when parents kidnap their adult children back from cults. It seems like there's a tendency among judges to be lenient when there's some room, but sometimes they're just stuck applying the law. See, Eilers v. Coy, Peterson v. Sorlien.

One day the burka cultists will seem mainstream and they will be complaining that THEIR children are running off to join an extreme cult.

Don't tell Jeff.

David - I agree with you the next step is going back into the caves where they will be free of all civilization.

As Jeff says, the frumma have no sense of irony.
It would never in a thousand years occur to them. The fundamentalist is always the guy to the right of you.
I'd tell them to hire a professional deprogrammer, but I wonder if one would even take the case - abducting the girl from one cult only to deliver her to another.

she is 19
more details in the link

@someone
A) She is 19. An adult.
B) Nothing in the article (even with the family planting listening devices, and disguising themselves to infiltrate the cult [who is the loonier party here?]) denotes that she was abducted. "Possible" is not "certain".
C) She is 19.
So she moved from a looney Chareidim cult to a loonier one. Oh well, that's life. Now she needs to get a Neturei Karta membership to complete the lunacy bingo. =/

Finally Chasidim have something in common with secular residents of Tel Aviv.

We lost a sheep that's gone astray. Nice.

and does the story end as follows?
"...from this experience, the parents realized their grevious error of having kept their daughter isolated from the modern world, denied her a secular education and the ability to engage in independent thought. For the rest of their lives they devoted themselves to helping others avoid their same mistakes."
maybe I should not hold my breath?
